Am I nuts requesting to move from midship to aft?

Thread summary: some people prefer forward cabins, some prefer mid-ship, some prefer aft. (<---- most annoying smiley ever)

And every section is close to something to which the person staying in that section likes being close.

Interestingly enough, the trend (in general, not necessarily on DIS) seems to be a preference for midship staterooms, and also for the higher decks. I've never figured out the midship thing...I'm guessing the higher decks is a throwback from Titanic days, when the cheap rooms were in the bowels of the ship. Personally, I like to be as close to the water as possible, so since deck 5 is the lowest with verandahs, that's another reason I love it.

We've sailed all three (forward, mid-ship, and aft). We love aft and our favorite rooms are the navigator verandahs. I love being able to make a quick run up to the drink station or for breakfast.

Man, I had no idea this question would cause such a stir of differing opinions.

While we have never sailed DCL, we have sailed many other lines and many of the "mega" ships such as the Grand Princess. regardless of size they all have aft, forward, and main elevator banks - three banks. The main bank is always the most heavily used no matter if the restaurants and casual dining is located in the aft or forward of the ship.

I spraigned my ankle severely on our last cruise and had to be wheel chair bound for three days. Our cabin was located mid ship as have been all our other cabins previously. We also always have traveled sans kids as they weren't born yet. We hadn't realized how much we had gotten in the habit of using the stairs and using the aft elevators until I was wheel chair bound and had to wait for elevators. It thoroughly stunk and sticks in my mind now to this day, two years later. It would take us significant extra time to wait for elevators -we actually had to begin planning for this time in order to be on time for the shows.

You all have been a great help in convincing me what to do. We are going to go with the change to aft - but its not so aft that I think it will matter much for motion or vibration. We're moving to 6608. Its not directly at the aft elevators, but its not far at all from them. Prior to this, we were really directly at the mid ship elevator banks. I have noticed in past cruises that you do notice people returning from the late shows and passing your cabin. We are early shows, early seating as we will be traveling with two small children, one under 2 years old - both with early bed times.

Thanks again everyone, oh, and this is really interesting so please, keep discussing your preferences.

We luv the back of the ship.. We always equate it to like riding in our boat on the Lake of the Ozarks.. The bench seat in the back of the boat is the smoothest.

Also... we NEVER use the elevators.. God gave us healthy legs to use.. Also burns those extra calories we consume on the cruise...

Aw, see now that was the way we thought prior to having the wee ones along - but we will be the annoying people with the stroller for the 13 mo old and I ain't luggin it up the stairs. (our stroller is really small, really for all you who hate the strollers on the DCL ships). I will probably use my hip carrier for her most of the time too, but even so, I don't want to be carrying her up those stairs - and knowing my son, we would have to carry him too.

Well apparently you all are not wrong at all. I am very happy with the fact that I figured this out now and not later.

My TA just got me on the phone with a CM and we chose a room - there were two left to choose from - I AM SAILING IN 2006!!!!

We had a choice of either right at the aft elevators or a few doors towards midship - the CM advised me to go with the one a few doors down, and I agreed. It will be a great location I am thoroughly convinced.

On past cruises we have always found ourselves treking the long hallways back to our room at midship because we found using the aft or forward elevators to be more convenient and easier due to crowds.

Thanks everyone for such great help - as always.

Only 2 left to choose from? What is your category and date? It looks like it could be around Spring Break..

We used the trick with our (4 year old son), he could be the leader or we would "race" up or down the stairs.. No one ever uses the stairs......

We're sailing April 29th, 2006 - I don't think this coincides with any vacations - the prices were cheaper than all surrounding weeks. I am shocked by how little choice there was.

We are in category 6.

I think we will definately use the race the stairs idea for going down to the club, but going any higher may be a little much for me or my husband carrying a one year old. We'll see - we have been stairs fans in the past.
