I have a ipod shuffle and I find that instead of buying cds off of amazon I am just buying my favorite songs from itunes

I do basically the same thing, but I buy the individual songs from amazon, not the whole cd's

Depends. According to the music industry you are because they want to sell more CDs. According to what the majority of music buyers are doing, however, you are perfectly normal. Few people buy entire CDs anymore. Instead it is all their single tracks. In fact, some in the industry are trying to figure out how to make the album a worthwhile sale with feature add-ons.

As for whether single track buying from iTunes vs. Amazon there's no technological advantage. Both have similar quality and are DRM-free. A few audiophiles insist digital copies are not as good as the originals, but most people can't tell the difference. (In fact blind studies have shown most audiophiles can't either.)

Personally I comparison shop. If a track is cheaper at Amazon (they've had some great deals lately), I buy from them over iTunes or vice versa.

Now if they'd get it together with TV shows and drop the DRM, I'd buy more of that too.

well I am still going to buy some cds because not every song is available on itunes

:confused3:confused3:confused3

Isn't this how Itunes pretty much started. People started loading music on to sites like Napster where other's could download for free, resulting in a HUGE lawsuit and sites like Itunes started springing up charging for the music. What is so wrong with buying one song for $1 vs buying 15 for $15?

I don't understand the question.

You are legally paying for your music, and you are asking if it is wrong? :confused3

Not sure what the question is. Do you think there is something wrong with buying a single song vs. an entire album? Or buying from I-tunes instead of Amazon? Me? I shop where the price is the best and I buy single tracks because often I don't like the rest of the album. Why get stuck with something I don't want/need? Who is telling you that you're wrong?

I buy CDs, rip the songs to iTunes, distribute them into playlists, and listen to them on my iPod (usually shuffled). This is a convenient way for me to listen to my music. I have only downloaded one individual song ever (free mp3 from Amazon).

That being said, I'm old enough to remember that many (most) vinyl albums were meant to be listed to in their entirety or at least a side at a time. There were themes and continuity and moods. With CDs, it's more difficult to maintain a flow over 12-15 songs than it was for 4-5 songs (or one!:hippie:).

Anyway, I've recently decided to recreate 'great album sides' as playlists and listen to them as originally designed.

If your question is, "Is it artistically wrong to listen to a single track instead of an album?", I would say 'sometimes'!;)

Yeah, I thought the same thing. itunes isn't selling black market music. The artists agree to have their works on itunes. It is the largest seller of music in the country. I don't understand why you are thinking this is bad.

I agree that as long as you're paying for your music, it doesn't matter if you buy whole CDs or single songs. They wouldn't offer single songs on iTunes or Amazon if they didn't want you to have that option.

I get my music from CDs and downloads from several other sources,, depending on who has what I want at the best price.

I buy singles from iTunes in the same way I used to buy 45s as a kid--same concept different technology. 45s were more fun. I had a great record player! My friends and I would sit on my bedroom floor and sift through my records and then we'd pop the little plastic thing into the middle so we could play them. :hippie:

okay my questions have been answered so if the thread can be closed I would be grateful
