Am I figuring this right?

I am trying to figure the most cost effective trip to WDW the last week of Sept -Sun thru Fri.
I do not need to buy park passes as I have some thru an auction I "won" and can purch the rest at a discount thru my hubby's work. Here are the amounts:

On the WDW vacation website it appears the cost of Beach Club Studio is $2463.46 which includes the room and ONE day park pass (would book one day in order to get free dining under the assumption it would be offered in Sept)

If I rented DVC points I could get a 2 bedroom Beach Club Villa for $1700 plus pay for DDP at $690 (3 adult prices, 1 child price) for a total of $2390.

Am I right in noting that it is CHEAPER to get a 2 BEDROOM 2 BATH HUGE BCV versus a studio room with free dining?

I MUST be doing something wrong right? Why would ANYONE go thru Disney versus renting thru a DVC member??? :confused3

I don't know if your numbers are right (didn't check) but it's certainly possible. Free dining means you pay rack rate for the room.

Renting DVC points is always going to be cheaper than rack rate and is often going to be cheaper than even a discounted room.

As for the renting vs. going through Disney -- there's a number of reasons:
1 - many people probably don't want the risk of a private renting transaction
2 - tight or no cancellation/refund policies on a points rental
3 - renting can be difficult - you have to find someone to rent from, pay attention to booking windows, etc. Going through Disney is easy.
4 - many people don't know anything about renting points
5 - much easier to get what you want through Disney than dealing with points and owners in many cases

And there's probably other reasons I'm not even thinking of

The biggest problem that you are going to have is getting a 2br at BCV for September at only 5 months out! But best of luck!

Eeeek, I thought Sept was the slowest month. I'll zip over to the rent board and see what I can find out. I'm pretty flexible. I can get a one bedroom or studio too. And BWV or WVL would be fine too.

Yes, your figures are correct. That is one of the reasons that many people rent DVC reservations from owners instead of booking through Disney.

It is a great way to save. There are differences and as a renter, you need to be aware of them (ie: cancellation policy, not being in control of the ressie, and daily mousekeeping) but can either save a lot of money or get a larger villa for the same or similar price!!

As others have said, securing something at any of the Epcot resorts during that week may be difficult as DVC owners book well in advance. Since that is when Food & Wine is going on, those resorts are very busy.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!!!
