I was so excited about making our vacation in January, after the holidays thinking that the crowds would be a non-issue and today I found out that the week we are going (January 9-16th) is MLK holiday weekend and the cheerleading competitions will be town that weekend too.

I am so disappointed and a little worried about the crowds.

Yes. You are doomed.

Kidding. MLK crowds usually die down after Monday, and cheerleaders, while annoying (flame suit!), don't really impact park crowds.

It will be more crowded than your average January, but no worries.

Well, from what I read, the cheerleaders are supposed to be there later the same week, like the 13th-16th, and MLK is on the Monday that we are leaving, but we will be there the weekend before, so we might hit crowds on the long weekend.

ugh........the agony of trying to make everything perfect......

We are going to be at WDW from Jan 6-14 for the marathon and this is the first we've heard of a cheerleading competition.

We were down the week before MLK weekend last year and it wasn't bad at all. Few lines, light crowds, etc. The WL was pretty busy when we checked out on Saturday morning...people coming and going. With the express check-out, we bypassed the congestion at the front desk.

I don't know when the cheerleading competition was held last year. If it was at the same time, we didn't notice. From what I've heard, though, most kids groups stay at the All Star resorts and I imagine the competition will be held at the sports complex. Hopefully most of the congestion will be focused on these two areas.

Hope you have a magical time! :earboy2:

Shall I add to your worries and say the International Builders Show will bring about 105,000 to town 1/11/ -1/14? That number is just attendees and does not include family members. Luckily, most people who attend the show are too tired to hit the parks. I do recommend dinner reservations on those days and to stay away from International drive. Last year, the traffic jams were horrific. It took almost 1.5 hrs to get from the convention center to Downtown Disney Friday at 5. It is one of the largest conventions in the country.
