Being a maternity nurse, I have to say that the "Back to Sleep" campaign has shown a GREAT reduction in SIDS (some statistics show almost 75%). Parents (expecially moms) have enough guilt and a parent would probably never get over the thought that although they heard all of the recommendations, they decided to do otherwise and something drastic happened. That said, I do understand your frustration. When you put your baby to sleep, do you swaddle him very snuggly so that when he moves, it doesn't shake his whole body and wake him up? Lying on their bellies is more comforting because the bed stifles their movements (on their backs, their arms and legs are up in the air and move more freely). With a child's life, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
