Am I an Evil Teacher?

I assigned a novel 3 weeks ago, and it is due Monday.

Today at school, we had to evacuate the building. School was cancelled at midday (during the evacuation) and there is no school tomorrow. Several students, mostly those who could drive, left without retrieving belongings left in classrooms. This afternoon, I sent an email to all of my students and reminded them that the novel is still due on Monday. One student emailed me back and said he had left his book at school, could not get it until Monday, and had no way to finish the novel. So, I sent all of my students this link: http://www.bartleby.com/83/ It's an online version of the novel.

So, am I an evil teacher, or am I simply being prudent?

Actually, I think your e mail was very nice. And that Monday is the due date and should stay that way. Where there is a will there is a way. Everyone else just wants an excuse to not be held accountable. That is a lifes lesson. But be prepared for the parent back lash. Now whose evil? lol

I think you should cut them a little slack and give them a couple extra days. Is the timeline really that critical?

I don't think you are evil.
They shouldn't have left without their belongings.

They knew it was due on monday. THey've known for three weeks.

Responsibility.
They need to learn it.

Guess I am evil too...... ;)

You are completely in the right. No one told them to wait until the last weekend to do the work.

(another evil one)

Nope, you're not evil. If it was just assigned yesterday, it may be a different situation but since they have had 3 weeks I think you are being more than generous with your e-mail.

They were evacuated!!! If I was evacuated from school, I'd absolutely leave without my belongings!

No way are you evil! Most of my teachers wouldn't have given us threeweeks to do it!

Everyone left things behind during the evacuation. Once school was cancelled, several went back to get their things. Most simply left.

Well the OP said "Several students, mostly those who could drive, left without retrieving belongings left in classrooms. " so I presume they were allowed to go back in and RETRIEVE their belongings.

Anyway, the point is they have KNOWN it was due for THREE weeks.

That's a tough one. Granted, they've had 3 weeks, but most kids are of course going to put a little bit (if not most of) the reading off til the weekend. I probably would have given them a day or two extra.

(I'm a teacher, btw)

Is school still cancelled tomorrow?
Yes, we go back on Monday. The building will be open but we can't have classes as there is currently no water in the building.

Not evil but where the heck do you live? I am so not ready for school to start and you have been in school for over three weeks already. Summer is too short.

They've known about it for 3 weeks. You provided them with an alternative. There is also the library.

However, if you are having second thoughts about it, tell them ON Monday that you'll give them until... to complete it.

That's what I was going to say. A lot of my teachers will go around and check who had it done, give them extra points, then announce that you get more days.

Summers were 3 months long when I was in school.
