Just one piece...once you capture your first night via the walking, you do not have to call daily to add and. You can make one call to MS on the day before your initial first day and add/drop a bunch of days.
For example, on June 18th, you book May 18th through May 25th since May 24th is your target start date and this reservation captures that night. On June 24th, you call drop the day at the front end and then add the ones you really want. As along as you call before June 25th, the first day someone can book the room you have reserved, you will be guaranteed to get the room.
There is no need to make daily calls to MS>
I have never had to use the "Walking" system but would like to make sure I understand it in case I ever have the need to use it.
My question on this would be a technical one on the capabilities of the reservation system...
Does the system look at overall availablility at the resort, or does it look at individual room availability?
My impression was that it looked at overall availability of the resort and the room assigners have the job of working all the reservations in to the available rooms. My thinking is based on the fact that when you make a reservation, you are not reserving a specific unit, only a specific type. The actual room units are assigned before check-in by the room assigners. I could be wrong, but this was my thinking on how the system works.
Based on the example given above, I want to stay May 24th through the 30th. If I book on June 18, say a studio, for May 18th through the 24th (7 nights), it takes a studio out of inventory for those days. However it puts a studio back in inventory starting on the 25th. Another guest could call in on June 23th and book a studio for May 23rd through May 29th and that would take a studio out of inventory. As long as there is at least one studio in inventory for those days, it should allow the reservation, but if that takes the last studio in inventory for May 25th-May 29th, when you call on June 25th, to drop/add dates, May 25th to May 30th, you could be out-of-luck as there is now no inventory for most of those dates, May 25th to May 29th.
If the system looks at overall availability, calling every day to walk the reservation seems like the only way to make sure that you get what you want. This is the method that I have seen spoken of the most on this forum.
I am just trying to understand how everything works, perhaps someone with knowledge of how the reservation systen actually works can clarify the matter.
