Alternative to a Lanyard?

I don't want to keep up with my lanyards (mine, DD5 and DS4) but we want to pin trade in a few weeks. BUT I don't want to lug a full size notebook around to the parks either. All of the smaller notebooks on ebay seem homemade, and I don't want to spend $$ and get a cheapo product in return.
Does anyone know of anything in between a lanyard and a full-sized notebook? From the pre-blackberry/PDA days, I'm looking for something the size of a day planner. (NO FANNYPACKS!)

Ummm... what about putting each pin in a snack size ziplock bag and using a backpack? My FIL and I both carried backpacks for snacks/bottled water/small purchases/etc. and it worked out really well. And they aren't as odd looking as a fannypack

With my carpal tunnel, I can't carry things long-term.
