My very Bestest friend is coming to out house for Thanksgiving. She is having a traditional feast the weekend before...any suggestions for our meal?? We are not traditionalists and have only cooked Thanksgiving once before....

You could make alot of different things other then a turkey.
Ham, Prime rib, seafood, lasagna.... Why not ask her what she would like to eat.

Watch the Food Channel. Of course, most of their meals this week are with turkey. But yesterday, the Barefoot Contessa used cornish game hens and Rachel Ray used boneless turkey breasts. I think all these recipes are on www.foodchannel.com

For the first time in my lifetime we are having: Filet Roast and I am making this "twice baked potato casserole" (found the recipe on the net)...along with cooked carrots, rolls and some other veggie I think.

roast beef or prime rib ... mmmmm.....

i'll second a vote for lasagna, as well. for a holiday, you want something fun and a bit more complicated and ornate than regular food... lasagna would fit the bill.

how bout a paella or cioppino (seafood stew with whole crabs?)

We had a "Thanksgiving" dinner with a bunch of friends this past Monday since many of them are going north for the holiday. I'm still looking forward to our own turkey on Thursday. Thanksgiving without turkey would be like Christmas without Jingle Bells! If we were invited someplace that wasn't having turkey I would not go. There are some traditions you just don't mess with.

Ok, I gotta admit, I need turkey on thanksgiving! LOL. BUT if I couldn't have the turkey then Prime Rib gets my vote! If you aren't big on eating much red meat then I would go with seafood as my second choice.
Whatever you end up serving/eating have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Some of our past Thanksgivings have been
*Steaks on the grill w/ twice baked potatos
*Chili w/ cornbread
*Homemade Pizza
*Cornish Hens

Usually it's just me, DH & our kids and sometimes my in-laws. This year we are going north for T-day and I'm making lasagna for 16 people. Good lord, what was I thinking?!? :confused3

THanks everyone for all the great ideas....I think I am going to do a Ham and small turkey breast!! Still fits with the holiday traditions but gives us a little variety!! Our side will be kugel, sweet potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and portabello mushrooms, broccili cheese casserole, jello salad, choclate cake, and pumpkin pie!!! Way more than enough for 6 people!!

One year we did seafood. We had crab legs, boiled shrimp, fish, hush puppies, the works. It was yummy!
Anoterh year we did a second Thanksgiving for the other side of the family and did the lasagna and ziti. Everyone seemed to like that also.
Now I am hungry.

We're having spaghetti and meatballs for Thanksgiving. My DH is really good at making them!
