ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Winter 2011 Edition

Hi all,

Just 3 weeks until our first trip to the Poly!:cool1: We are so excited!

I have a question for those of you who know so much. . .

When we were at the Wilderness Lodge, every evening there were characters in the lobby for meet/greet/photos. Was that something special for the holidays, or is that what happens in the deluxe resorts? We would love that!

Thanks!

The two times we've stayed at the Poly we did not see characters hanging around the lobby. The only time I have heard of this is when 'Ohana was closed for a few days for a sprucing-up and they had Lilo & Stitch doing little meet & greets since they weren't having the usual character breakfast.

Will make a breakfast reservation at Kona Cafe then ;) Been DYING for some Tonga Toast!!! My wife swears it's the only reason we are staying at the Poly. I ordered tonga toast at Rainforest Cafe last year but it was the ghetto toast and not the real thing. :(

:lmao: "ghetto toast" Too funny!

It's True! It was like regular french toast (light on the frenching) with syrup and some fruit. I was most disappointed :(

Get the Pineapple-Macadamia Nut pancakes. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed. Heaven on a plate!! :cloud9:

We've seen characters out and about in various lobbies during the holidays but not at any other time. Not to say it won't happen, but it's not the norm. Would be kind of fun, though!

Dang those look good! Beats the heck out of the taco bell I ate tonight! :headache:

Not sure if this belongs here or the dining thread....

I'm thinking we'll go with DDP, which gives us 7 TS meals. How many would you use at the Poly? I'm thinking we'll do Ohana for dinner and breakfast and Kona for dinner. Are we missing a lot by not doing Kona for breakfast? It looks like we can get Tonga Toast at Captain Cook's. Should we make two dinner reservations for Ohana? We've never been. I wonder if we'll go the first night and wish we could go again.

How many of your sit-down meals to you generally allocate to the Poly when staying there?

Thanks!

We love Ohana!!! You certainly want to do it! We loved breakfast and dinner....great character interaction. The kids always want to do both. Not sure if I would do Ohana twice for dinner:confused3 I like Kona, also...great food. In fact, we've eaten there 3 times (lunch and dinner) My only complaint is that the service can be a bit slow...that was our experience;)

I agree with hstrickland. We love 'Ohana, breakfast & dinner, but I'm not sure if you would want to do dinner twice - it is a fixed menu, so you'd be eating the exact same meal twice, unless you love it so much you're good with that. :confused3

They are!! Personally tonga toast isn't my thing, but those pancakes are amazing! :thumbsup2

Hey gang,
Sorry if anyone has posted on this already but does anyone have any info on the quiet pool rehab? It was supposed to be completed on the 18th. What exactly did they do in the rehab?

There are soo many restaurants you can choose from at Disney. We love Ohana but two meals during the same stay is too much for us. I would not waste a dining credit for tonga toast only. The tonga toast is so big and so sweet that after you eat that you would not want anything else for that meal. I would just pay for it at CC. We eat at CC a lot because we have teens. It is so easy to grab a delicious pulled pork and some French fries.

Got this today from the Tikiman site :

"Update as of Febreuary 9, dates have now changes to February 21 to April 8th."

The rehab the last I heard has been rescheduled. And they are planning to do the work from 21 Feb. To April 8th. :thumbsup2

I prefer to eat at the location I am going to be at and don't like to spend time getting to other resorts or places I won't be at. So I actually like to enjoy the restaurants that my resort has to offer. When we stay at the Poly, we love Ohanas and we would eat their twice for dinner if we could get reservations! But that's just us. We tried Ohanas for breakfast and really enjoyed the character breakfast (keep in mind the food is just fine - nothing unique like Kona Cafe). We also eat at Kona Cafe for dinner - but I've personally found it going downhill each time we go and don't think I'll be back until they make a change. I would eat their for breakfast though - that menu looks great!

What's great about being on the monorail is that you can easily include Grand Floridian and Contemporary in your close to 'home' restaurants. One night we were going to MK and we ate at the Wave for dinner. The dinner was great and it was nice to walk from Contemporary to MK and visit that resort. I've also done Chef Mickey's for dinner (yuck) and the GF afternoon tea (enjoyable) but there are other restaurants as well!

After much deliberation, I *think* we are going to the Polynesian for my Mom's birthday this year. We are usually Boardwalk people, but we both really want to be close to the MK and honestly I looooove the Poly theme. My mom will be 70 this year, and we want to do it up right. :) It will be Mom, me, and my 11 year old daughter.

We were supposed to go last year, but it was a crazy year. My dad died, then 6 months later my 98 year old grandmother died. On top of that, we opened a new store and that has been stressful. We really need a big pick-me-up, and I think the Poly will be the way to do it.

We've been bantering back and forth about club level or not. We're probably doing deluxe dining, so really the club level might be overkill. Or would it? Mom's pretty set on the deluxe dining, as we like many of the signature dining places.

I was thinking of requesting the Tahiti building for the proximity to the TTC. Does this sound like a good idea? I've never stayed at the Polynesian, but I can sure picture myself there, having a nice Lapu-lapu or whatever that pineapple drink is called!

We're planning for the late October (probably to include Halloween) but I might book late September on that general public code, just in case nothing comes up for Halloween. We can close the store and go to Disney whenever, but we'd prefer being there over Halloween. However, if we don't have a discount code for that time, then late September it is!

I have the Poly built up in my mind as my perfect Disney resort. I am sure I won't be disappointed! As long as I don't have a snake in my room, I think I'll be okay. :)

Any opinions about club level with deluxe dining are much appreciated!

My thoughts exactly. We would definitely eat at 'Ohana for dinner more than once on a trip. If we could get the ADRs, and as long as it didn't interfere with at least one trip to the California Grill and one to Artist Point. :goodvibes

We do Club Level with Deluxe dining pretty much exclusively anymore. We like to use a "one credit" meal for breakfast each morning (the Kona Cafe is pretty much where we have breakfast EVERY morning, :thumbsup2), have a snack from the lounge in the afternoon, and then a "two credit" Signature dinner (like the California Grill), or dinner show (such as the Hoop De Doo Revue).

This won't work out perfectly for having a two credit meal every night, but having the lounge there allows for a great deal of flexibility in how to divvy up those precious credits and work in dinner shows and signature meals. I think we usually end up eating breakfast in the lounge once on each trip as well to put that credit toward something else.

I hope you have a great time at the Poly if you choose to go. I know it has a lot of us held captive :goodvibes.

The time you are wanting to go is awesome! I booked on a PIN code I received and it only covered 10/23-30. Hopefully, they will release some room only codes for that time frame. The end of October is so nice. Although it has been hot the last couple of years we really did not encounter rain. :thumbsup2

As far as the DDP Deluxe and club level....I think you are correct that it will be overkill. The reg DDP and Club level is too much food for us. If you are really set on doing the the deluxe dining plan than I would just get a TPV room. :wizard:
