On this day, January 16, 1893, 110 years ago,
U.S. Marines, acting at the invitation of wealthy sugar planters,
invaded the Kingdom of Hawaii and overthrew Queen Lili'uokalani,
eighth monarch in the line of King Kamehameha I.
Five years later, Hawaii was formally annexed by the U.S.
It became a U.S. "territory" in 1900, and the 50th state in 1959.

One wonders how WWII would have turned out if that did not happen. The Emperor of Japan was interested in having one of his children marry into the Hawaiian monarchy at one time. During Queen Lili'uokalani's house arrest, she was visited by U.S. Senators in hopes of reversing her arrest and restoring her to the throne. When she was asked what would happen to those who orchestrated her arrest, she indicated that they would be beheaded once she was restured to the throne. That statement ended any hope of her return to the throne. While no one was "proud" of dethroning her, they weren't going to be responsible for the execution of American citizens.
