I spotted these from the steam ship today. The only thing I can think of is they are out there to humanly capture younger alligators.

This is the trap.

This is a zoomed out so you can see where it is located.

I personally like the idea, my biggest thought here though is that trap looks like it's not set and something might have been caught.

My other thought is maybe this is for other wildlife but the trap was rather long so it's not the size i've seen used for raccoons or similar.

- I don't think if something were caught they would just cover it up. They would remove the cage.
- The pinestraw to the water is undisturbed so no animal has traveled up that way.
- My guess is they would set it at night, removing the cover.
- Come AM if nothing is caught they just cover it up so it's not so obvious to guests.

It is probably covered because they 1) don't want to bring attention to it and 2) they don't want you to see the bait.

So you're saying they put out a goat like in Jurassic Park? ;)
No, but back in '99 I was canoeing around Ft. Wilderness I went somewhere I think I should not have been. There was a live chicken in a wire cage thing. When I went back and told the canoe rental guy what I saw he said "you were where?" and told me I saw an alligator trap.

ETA: I figured it was an alligator trap, but had to verify

My DH and I have trapped opossum, raccoon and groundhogs where we live. We cover all of ours with a trash bag to disguise it from the animal, not from people (although in this case, it serves a dual purpose). It's a standard thing where I am from that people do with traps. Works great!
