the video report can be seen on cnn.com.. the place where it happened is near a huge park -markham park-which we go to alot.
apparently, she was jogging next to a canal..it got her and later she was found dead in the water. :sad2:

That is sad. :( I'll keep her families in my prayers.

That is so sad. I remember a few years ago a 3 year old, his mother and Grandmother were in their yard along with the family dog. Apparently the mother and Grandmother were doing a little gardening and the boy was playing with the dog and a ball.
The dog had been near the edge of the pond that was not too far off and before anyone noticed, the little boy up and dissapeared. At first the police suspected the Mother and Grandmother of hiding something (facts).
3 or 4 days later they found the little boys body still in the mouth of an alligator several yards down in the water.

Such a sad story. Those alligators can be fast, quiet and so dangerous.

I read about it, that is so sad.

They caught one gator, but it doesn't appear to be the one. The one they caught they looked at the stmach contents, they found tennis balls and a football.

So the hunt is still on.

Terrible news, and not what I want ot hear, since my DD is moving to Pensacola next month!

Attacks are rare and death is even more rare, but if you're like me, you still worry as a parent.

I've only ever seen a couple of gators in 40 years of living in Florida, so I think the chances she would see one is unlikely.

My advice to anyone, stay away from canal banks, and should you be in an area of water (ocean excluded), just be on the lookout. They are extremely quick for a short distance. But have been found in people's yards and under cars.

One thing you must remember in FL, including WDW, is to treat all bodies of water as though an alligator is in them (except the ocean, but then there might be sharks :sunny: ) . More than likely, you will never see one, but why take the chance?

So sad that this happened. It's just another reminder that we are taking too much habitat from the wildlife. :guilty:

I was just giving my DS10 this speech. He's going to his friends house and they are close to a canal. I told him just to not go near it.

It's hard to believe that there are so many alligators in Florida. This is a terrible story. On the west coast, we can't imagine such dangers.

I heard this (through a running website) - really sad :sad1:

But I don't understand why she put herself in that kind of danger anyway. I mean, surely she was aware that, in Florida, jogging next to a body of water isn't such a great idea - like I stay away from the areas of canal near me where the swans nest (you do not want to be chased by a swan!).

I'm presuming that gators attack out of fear or to protect their young - or do they just genuinely want to eat us?

But still - very very sad :sad2:

DH runs on a nearby (and VERY popular) trail. And yes, he has run right by gators. (Yes, as in multiple.) :rolleyes2 That alone would concern me. But he says they don't even look up.
This is also the man who has run during severe tornatic activity too, with lightning zapping and trees falling all around him. :sad2:

I think because it has been so dry in FL, that wildlife is coming in closer to where humans are. And sadly, alot of people in FL feed gators, by choice.
I would not want a gator coming around my place looking for food when it is not fed!

Just what I was thinking!

Luv2Roam - you need to tell your husband that it's OK (good, even!) to take a day off once in a while (even Paula Radcliffe - fastest female marathoner in the world - takes every 8th day off). It's great to be committed (I adore running and would be a bit lost without it), but your husbands LIFE is far more important  :thumbsup2

Well, he ran (and walked some) in the Goofy Challenge in January -- AND signed up for next year's! :rolleyes2 What does that say!? :rolleyes1 (13.1 miles on Saturday and 26.2 on Sunday)

I'm guessing avoiding all alligators might be difficult. When we went to WDW, we stayed at Shades of Green and walked on a path past a pond over to the Polynesian several times a day. It was a well traveled path and we could definately see alligators in the pond. We kept an eye out, but went on the assumption that no one had been hurt yet, so we'd be okay. That poor lady probably thought the same.

Yes - I've heard of the Goofy Challenge :rotfl:

Your husband sounds genuinely obsessed with running - many non-runners would think that anyone who is committed to running is 'obsessed', but from a very committed runner, I can assure you that your DH is indeed in need of help :lmao:

(I'm JK!)

That poor woman and her family. That's a horrible way to die since from what I understand gators usually drowns their prey.

My mom lives on a lake in Florida about 40 miles from WDW. There are many gators in it and they usually come out at dusk to feed. Her neighbors let the grandkids swim in the lake and stand guard with a rifle just in case :sad2: . Some people have the brain of a gnat  .
