allergy question

toy story can have one of longest waits in wheelchair line. i also have scent problems, another place to watch is the bathrooms as most have scents yo mask. you can have a person near you in line with a strong scent on, nothing Disney can do. GAC will help with some of your problems but getting away from scents is not going to be easy. you will not get moved to front of line. you will not be able to get away from scents either by Disney or others. i have had to leave lines because of others scents that were that strong. all i can say if good luck and i am headed down in early Aug.

I got thinking about you last night and got worried for you. How are you getting to WDW? Flying from NJ will take over 3 hours for a nonstop flight. How will that work? Are you planning any TS meals? Those will never take less than 40 minutes. Heck, sometimes it can take over 40 minutes at CS locations when you include the time it takes from when you first walk into the building to get in line until you're done eating, especially during peak times (you can always take your food outside and eat outdoors with CS at least). Where are you going to sleep? I'd recommend bringing your own bedding and towels and request an initial chemical free deep cleaning of your room and then put up the do not disturb sign every day so mousekeeping won't come back in and accidentally use some kind of cleaners in your room despite the request for no chemicals. Is your exposure cumulative or is there a period of time between exposures which seems to wipe the slate clean?

I guess I'm wondering how you cope in your day to day life as well. Do you manage to get grocery shopping done in under 40 minutes from the time you enter the store until the time you leave? Do you go to any school functions for your kids? Do you go to other people's houses or restaurants or movies? I really do feel for you.

I definitely agree with Yoshiandi that daily preventative measures would be an excellent idea for you. My DD takes Zyrtec with Nasonex daily during allergy season along with us taking preventative measures within the home in order to attempt to avoid the need for steroids and inhalers and her allergies aren't even as severe as yours. I would think that preventative medicines could at least help with the amount of time you can be exposed before you go into ana shock.[/QUOTE]

I was actually wondering the same thing. I have severe environmental allergies....I had to stop allergy shots because I went into anaphylaxis twice during the buildup phase (I have severe food and chemical allergies as well) and I take zyrtec 2x day, patanol eye drops, patanase nasal spray, symbicort 2x day and allegra once a day (thats only as needed). It doesn't make eveyrthing 100% better but I can't function without my meds. Also, are they sure its just allergies and not something like asthma? I've had asthma attacks because of smells and purfumes that resemble allergic reactions and respond to similar treatments (dose of epi, steroids, etc). My epi pens are actually prescribed for both food allergies and severe asthma

Also, OP...off topic.....have you had your IgE checked? That would tell your allergist if the allergic part of your immune system is overactive. 4 years ago, mine was at almost 5000 (normal is up to around 400 or so I think). With treatments and immunosuppresents, we've gotten it down to about 1000. Still like 2 1/2 times the max it should be but better than before!

You said you carry benedryl and an Epi-pen. Do you take Zyrtec or Allegra every day anyway to help prevent a reaction or do you treat as you get a reaction? And if it is something you are breathing in, what about a nasal allergen spray like Flonaze?? :confused3 I would think taking something every day would lessen the chance of a reaction and then if something did become severe, you could pop a benedryl.

Coming from an allergy filled family, I feel your pain. My mom is super sensitive to perfumes and it will bring on wicked migraines. I have to use Zyrtec and Flonase in the spring with all that wonderful pollen in the air :upsidedow

Good Luck on your trip!!! :cheer2:
I'm allegic to Zyrtec.
I took Allegra everyday until I got pregnant. You can't take a level 3 allergy med while you are pregnant so I was put on Claritin. My doctor wanted to see if my hormones would help the allergy. I started getting hives, tongue & lips started itching so I was put back on Allegra.

I take a Benedryl just before my 2 1/2 hour flight and my mom watches my kids. We are hardly in our room at Disney. At night once my boys are sleeping I just take benedryl and I don't have a problem with sleeping in the room. Benedryl makes me tired; the kind of tired where you are awake but unaware at the same time. My head is floppy and arms are heavy; I hate the feeling. So I can't take them in the parks (unless it's an emergency). Since this problem started after my last trip I don't know what I'll do about the TS meals. I guess I will have to see how it goes. We are not slow eaters but after awhile if I start to have a problem I'll just leave and wait. Not a big deal to me. I am not going to stop my family from enjoying their meal just because I can sit there. CS we usually eat outside my DS & mom can get the meals.

Thank you. My mom has always had scent problems. Her asthma acts up when people that took a bath in their perfume walk past her.

Actually my husband does the grocery shopping. I am always at my son's school for school parties with no problems, guess the kids don't smell bad. My son's goes to a private school and no perfumes is a rule so that must help with my conditions. The only time I start having problems is when we have school meetings and I'm not sitting next to the open door. Some women/men don't understand you spray perfume on not pour it on you.

FYI: I carry an inhaler for my asthma.

I don't go over anyone's house and I only have people here if it's nice out so we can be outside. They know not to wear perfumes or smoke here.

Never had my IgE checked.

Hope I answered all the questions

You should definitely get that checked. Very shocked your allergist never checked that. Its a basic lab test for all allergists as far as I know. Depending on that (and maybe even without that) you might be a candidate for xolair treatments. It was developed for severe allergic asthma but my allergist is planning on using it based just on my allergies and my IgE level (my asthma is very bad but my allergies are so bad that I would qualify even without asthma)
