For those of you with bad allergies and asthma, are there any hotels within walking distance that you've had trouble with? Or are there hotels that you haven't had any allergy/asthma problems with?

The past couple of years we've gone to DLR with DH's family during spring break and my SIL has bad allergies and asthma. The past 2 years we've stayed at the Super 8 on Katella and she thought the rooms seemed musty and she got sick both years. My MIL pays for the hotel rooms and this year she agreed to look for a nicer place that hopefully won't bother my SIL.

Right now we're looking at the CCI since DH and i have stayed there a few times and love it but I'm looking for other alternatives to show my MIL. I've only stayed at CCI, Super 8, the Hilton and the Hyatt so I don't have experience with the other hotels on harbor.

Thanks for any suggestions! :)

Oh yeah, and a free breakfast is a necessity, according to MIL, since it keeps my nephews happy.

Someone said on another thread (I can't find it now) that you can call ahead to the hotels and ask for an Allergen/Allergy cleaning prior to check in. I believe they will completely change out all the bedding including the comforters and pillow and maybe shampoo the rugs?? It is worth a phone call to see if any of the hotels you are looking at offer that service. Don't know if it is feasible but could she bring a small portable air purifier like this:

Good luck.

FWIW I've got really severe allergies/asthma, and have never had a problem with HOJO's. The only thing is that they don't have a free brekki, but have a fully stocked gift shop loaded with breakfast items. Hope that this helps you out.

I have extremely bad allergies, bordering on asthma. There have been times and places over the years where I sat in a chair all night long, because I couldn't breathe if I lay down. Thankfully, that hasn't happened at a hotel near DLR.

We almost always stay at HoJo's. And I've never had any allergy problems there.

HTH,
Bob

She always brings her air purifier but the rooms at the Super 8 are just musty so it hasn't really helped.

Thanks for the link! I will mention to my MIL about asking the hotels if they will do an allergen cleaning.

Thanks! I will suggest Hojos to MIL and tell her about the gift shop. Not sure if that will be good enough for my nephews (i think they like the idea of going and getting their own breakfast when it's free) but it's worth looking into, especially since it seems to be an allergy friendly place.

Keep the suggestions coming! :goodvibes

I have allergies and asthma, and I agree that the Super 8s seem musty and bother me a bit. We have had no problems at HOJOs, Portofino Inn & Suites or Hampton Inn.

Thanks, I'll look into those hotels. :goodvibes

What about Park Vue, BWPPI or others that are right across the street? Are there any closer hotels that people have found to be allergy friendly?

I have allergy induced asthma, and my twins have asthma. We have stayed at the BWPPI and did not have any issues - we do call ahead of time and ask for a really good cleaning of the room - so that might be why we don't have any issues. We've also stayed at the Hyatt, Hilton, Anabella, and the Motel 6 (the one that was recently remodeled) and have not had issues at any of those. I would stay away from Days Inn, we stayed at two different ones around Disney and both times we had to leave in the middle of the night - I couldn't breath for one trip and we had to take one of our boys to the hospital for breathing another time.

Thanks for the suggestions and the warning about Days Inn. :)

Anyone have any allergy experience (good or bad) with the Tropicana?

Desert Inn and Suites gave my asthma quite some trouble. It wasn't the room though, more the air condition in combination with the really odd weather.

California it's self causes my Allergies to Explode!! it's all those flowers and nut trees! my Best Advice is to bring ALL your allergy meds with you!! And use them every morning and evening!! I also bring Ocean an Over the Counter product, look for the one without steroids. And for really bad times I use Afrin Nasal Spray!

Oh and the Smoke from the LA fires didn't help either!!

I would say get a hotel that is NOT friendly to pets, and one without carpeting if there is such a thing??

Well, we are all California natives and SIL lives in the LA area so there won't be much change in what she regularly experiences as far as that goes. I grew up in Northern California and I used to have horrible allergies but I've hardly had any allergies at all since we've lived in Southern California (about 15 years now). I think it must be because there's more cement than trees down here. :rotfl2:

No, the fires don't help. My SIL had to go up north for several days to get away from the smoke the last time there was a bad fire.

I have severe asthma and allergies and we have stayed at Tropicana, HOJOs and Fairfield Inn with no problems.

Thank you! This helps a lot. I will pass all this info along to my MIL. :)
