we are traveling on allegiant in the next week. We were only planning on taking carry ons, since we are light packers. We have the standard rolling carry on bags, just wondered if anyone has had any trouble with being oversize for carry ons, and how strict they are on it.

The more people try to bring on board to avoid paying baggage fees, the stricter they are going to get about carry-ons.

I would check the Alligient site as to what criteria they consider a carry-on and stick to it.

Sadly, for those like you who do pack light, you are being penalized by the ones that are bringing out larger and larger bags as carry-ons, and then getting them gate-checked at no cost to avoid the fee.

I fly Allegiant tomorrow. I have heard they are strict on carryon size. They include wheels and handles. I would check the allegiant page get the dimensions and make sure your bag meets those. I know it differs per airport but some have charged to gatecheck your bag if its over the size. Hope that helps.. Ill post more after my trip :)

From their web site:

What are the restrictions and requirements for carry–on baggage?
Carry-on bags must comply with the following baggage regulations:
Each e-ticketed passenger is allowed to carry on the aircraft one bag
plus one personal item.
The exterior dimensions for a carry-on bag must not exceed 9" H x 14" W x 22" D. This measurement includes wheels, pockets, handles and decorations.
The bag must be able to fit under your seat or in the overhead compartment.

Examples of personal items include:
Male or female purse
Briefcase
Laptop computer
Camera case
Diaper bag
Portable electronic devices of similar or smaller size to items listed above
The exterior dimensions for a personal item must not exceed 9" H X 16" W X 19" D (this measurement includes wheels, pockets, handles and decorations)
The personal item must be placed under the seat in front of you

Simply measure your bag and see if it is within the rules. The measurements assure that he bag will easily and properly fit in the overhead compartment.

We almost always do carry on only. The wife and I will each have a moderate sized backpack that fits the required dimensions. I removed the aluminum back stays from mine to stay within the measurements. The nice thing about the backpack is you can stuff/squeeze a bit to fit the space. I also see plenty of the standard size rolling carry on suitcases and if within the limits they fit fine too.

We also each carry a bike messenger bag as our personal item. Once again within (often smaller) dimensions noted above and stored on the floor at our feet. I often only have mine half full which allows a little shuffling of things if one bag (my wifes) is overstuffed.

We pay for assigned seats so we can sit next to each other but not for priority boarding. Overhead space fills up quickly so if you are the last group called to board (open seating) the only available overhead space may be far away from your actual seat. Our flights have generally been pretty full but it seems they manage to get everyone's carry on stowed away. I have found that choosing seats in rows 20 and higher puts us early on in the call to board group and more choices of overhead location.

Ugh...unfortunately, I think my bags are too big. They are all higher than 9". that is a crazy dimension! I really hate the thought of having to pay $35 each way for one stinking bag! I am honestly, tempted to go to the airport and have them checked out. it's only about 10 minutes away. I paid for our seat assignment, but not priority boarding.

Actually 9" is pretty normal for the rolling carry on type bags. How squishable is your bag? So long as you don't overstuff it and can push it down a bit it should slide through the 9" opening of the overhead.

You can always put some of your stuff into your personal bag (oversized purse) so the suitcase is not bulging out.

I would probably not make a special trip to the airport, just use a ruler. If it is close I would not say anything at all and just act like you know that it will fit.

both of mine are normal 21" carry ons, but they don't measure 9" high. Weird. Is the opening actually only 9"? My sister is driving, and she may be able to take a bag. I can stuff that one, and then leave the others not quite full. It may work.

Just flew Allegiant yesterday it was great. The overhead bins only fit about 3 regular size carryons if they have wheels etc. My carryon is regular carryon size that I use on Continental and AA. They fit side to side instead of long ways. There is also a bin to see if your bag will fit when you check in at the airport. They will give youa pink tag for ur bag if it meets carryon requirements. You should be fine. Mine was tight but it worked. best of luck

If you are going to go to the airport to check, be sure it's a day that they have flights since Allegiant does not fly everyday out of most airports. They probably do not staff the desk when there is no flight going out.

Allegaint is strict about sizes, that being said they checked my carry on rolling bag free both ways. It depends on how full the plane is I think.

Everytime I have flown Allegiant they have had too many carry-ons and so have checked baggage free. They ask for people to volunteer to have their baggage checked.

I don't think the plane is full. I can still book a fare on our flight tomorrow for $35!! Wish I had waited! ;) I ended up taking two bags to my sister. She has a trunk that I swear could hold a football team. We'll see how it is on the way back. So I have one to carry on, but it's not that full, so I should be all right.

I'm wondering about the checked baggage fees. I thought the fees were $35 each way, but when I tried to add a checked baggage when I booked online, it added $59! So I took it off, went and tried again this week, and still the $59 EACH way! It's a nonstop flight, so I can't figure it out.

I'm not sure if we will be able to get everything we need in 5 carryons (5 of us). I guess I need to call Allegiant at this point :headache:

Now to measure my carry-ons!

The website shows $35. Are you sure it's not picking up other fees? Seat assignments?

OT....but when did Allegiant start flying into Sanford again? I thought they moved to MCO last year and now I see that they are back at Sanford:confused3. Oh well.... I think AirTran is still a better deal from GR.

I think last September. It was almost exactly a year so I assume they just had a 1 year lease at MCO and didn't renew.

Allegiant emailed me back and said the 59.00 was for round trip. $35.00 each way at the gate. It doesn't appear that way on the website though. I will try again!!

We have flown allegiant a few times now. They are VERY strict. We usually pay for suit case and have personal item with no carry on. I think they charge different prices on diff flights.
