I know lots of Budget Boarders read "All You" magazine for the great coupons. I was so excited to receive the November 20 issue as a gift to read while confined to my house.

I became mortified, though, when I got to page 70 where they suggest a woman whose family outran a tornado in a car was 'heroic.' I wanted to make sure my fellow budget boarders who aren't from tornado prone areas know- this is the WORST thing you can do in a tornado. Stay put and get in a basement if possible. Not sure why they're holding her up as heroic anyway- from the article she was just following the instructions of her idiot brother in law.

I think it was heroic because she knew she had to run. Her house was completely destroyed and they all would ahve been killed if they hadn't left. Sometimes you ahve to listen to your instinct eevn when everyone tells you it is the wrong thing to do. She saved herself and her family.

The story doesn't read that way to me- sounds like she blindly followed instructions rather than 'knowing she had to run.'

This is the impression I got, too. It did work out for her, if she had stayed she would've been killed, but really I think they just got lucky. If they had made a wrong turn, if the storm changed directions or was stronger than they thought, if there were other tornadoes where they headed to, etc. it wouldn't have worked out that way, they were more lucky than heroic. And it wasn't her idea to run.

..... and the dog was left behind. That really got me mad . They left this poor animal behind to die. It was probably scared beyond scared, not knowing what was happening, not knowing where its "parents" were, not knowing why they left him/her, and probably died a very horrible death.

I see no heroics in ANYONE in that story --- the woman, her brother in law, none of them. I just see a bunch of selfish people who couldn't find room to put the dog in the car with them.

Which makes the entire family's reckless stupidity even more annoying.

Yes, I can see where fleeing can be stupid but in this case it did save their lives. Sorry you find that annoying

No room for the dog??? WHAT!!?? That is disturbing beyond belief. And what does that teach her children?

I read this as a Mom on bedrest, preggo with twins at a very critical stage, with a tornado bearing down on them. Had she not made the decision to try to outrun this thing, she and her entire family would have been killed. She didn't outrun it for fun or thrill, but because they knew it was going to be a real bad one and the shelter they had would not protect them. That is quite amazing in my book.

You can't 'make a decision to outrun a tornado.' Tornados can turn on a dime, or go back up into the clouds and come back down at a random other location.

I didn't say it was annoying they survived. I find it annoying that she risked her lives and her twins lives by doing the worst thing you can do in a tornado. If you are in a car and have NO other shelter, it's recommended to get OUT of the car and go lie down in the ditch, because it's safer than being in a car.

They got stupid lucky, but that doesn't mean they should be held up as heros.

Were they able to find the dog? Some pets hide if there is a lot of commotion going on. As much as I have loved every pet that I have, there is a distinction between a pet and your family. Everyone may have to face that at some point. It's not plesant, but you can't put your family at risk for an animal if you have to make that choice.

I don't think she is a "hero" but it is a good thing.

MTE. SHe and her family were incredibly lucky that they fled the house and incredibly lucky that when they left they weren't killed. As stupid or annoying their decision was to leave, I'm sure not one of them is regretting it.
