I noticed in the thread above that many of you are looking for vacation home information, so I thought I'd give a little report from our 10-20-10/24 trip. We rented an all star vacation home--the 2nd highest tier. There were 9 of us (6 A, 3 C). The house had 6 bdr, 3 1/2 baths. And the internet cafe.

We landed on 10/14 at 11 and had hoped to grocery shop and check into the house early as I knew from their website no one had stayed there for several days. When we called, they said "no check in until 4." We were a little disappointed, but knew there were no guarantees, so we just went to MGM instead.

Checked in around 6, I think. The Windsor Palms appeared to be the farthest from the All Star Office. It wasn't too far from the parks. Depending on the time of day and the park, it took anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes to get to and from the park. For example, MK was always longer when you factor in the TTC, etc.

The house was large and very nicely decorated. We enjoyed the experience overall. Liked having the kitchen. It worked VERY well for small children to give them space to run around, to swim, and to get ready.

Now, the complaints:

1. When we arrived, we had a hard time figuring out the pool alarm. I know we shouldn't have been such dunces, but coming form WI, we were completely unaware. The signs were NOT self explanatory to me. I know we weren't the only ones to have a problem as I heard others checking in setting it off left and right. I think they should provide better directions at check in.
2. We paid to have the pool heated, and we think it was, but not very well. It was chilly the whole time we were there even though the weather was warm. The mechanics were locked up so we were unable to make any changes to the temperature.
3. The internet cafe was a joke. There were 3 computers, but initially, we couldn't get any of them to connect to the internet. I called the office, and they didn't know what to do, so they ended up sending a technician out the next day. He managed to get one up and running, but it was only an AOL dial up. I guess that just surprised me. I'm not sure that it's good advertising to call it a Cyber Cafe, with one dial up connection for 3 computers.
4. The noise. The houses are NOT soundproof. We could hear everything in EVERY room at ALL times. And we could hear everything outside as well. I would say this was as bad, if not worse than a hotel room. Had I known, I would have taken a noise machine.

General good stuff.

The houses are well equipped. The beds are comfortable. The space in the bathrooms is more than adequate. It was really relaxing to return there in the middle of the day for a break, and at the end of the night. Even though I wanted to stay onsite, I admit, there really were aspects of leaving (especially since I have a 3 year old) that I really appreciated. Also, if not everyone chose to go back in the evening, it was much easier to hang out at a house than at a hotel room. The price for us, which would have equated to 3 rooms onsite was good. I believe the rate was just over $200/night. There were some extras like cleaning fee and pool heating, but still would have been more to get three decent rooms onsite. For this size group, it was definitely worth it to us.

Glad you did enjoy your stay in the vacation home. I am sorry everything was not as great as it could have been for you.

"2. We paid to have the pool heated, and we think it was, but not very well. It was chilly the whole time we were there even though the weather was warm. The mechanics were locked up so we were unable to make any changes to the temperature."

Did you keep the pool cover on at night and when not in use to hold the heat in? Also, if you called the mgt company and made them aware the pool was not heating they could have sent soemone out to check it for you.

also, didnt they have instrcuticons for the pool alarm next to the doors? We have the instructions framed and next to the alarms on the doors so noone gets the screeching noise and scares them to death. :)

I hope you will give vacation homes a try again. They can be great!! Maybe this was not the type of home or floor plan for you.

I know our home is very sound proof. Maybe because it is smaller and 1 story.

Thanks for sharing your story. I hope you will consider a vacation home again!!

Take Care!!

Just a couple of notes. We did not see or appear to have access to a pool cover. Could be we missed it, but again, since we are from Wisconsin and this was completely unusual, we would not have known what to do. This would be good information to provide guests. We did ask about the pool, and they said that since it was just turned on it would take a while, so we were patient.

Yes, there are instructions on the pool alarm by the doors. Like I said, we were dunces to an extent, but this is a completely foreign concept to us so it wasn't as easy to figure it out as we thought. When people arrive, they are very excited (we were) to check everything out, so you go running out to the pool, and it took us like 5 minutes to figure out how to turn the thing off. I don't blame the vacation home--just think it would be good to give that info upon check in since most people are completely unaware.

I just thought some of this information would help others who might be trying one out. Things to keep in mind, to make their stay even better. I would certainly consider it again, but I'm anxious to stay onsite to compare. I definitely think it worth it with a large group.

We rented from villadirect in Emerald Island, and had the same comment about the pool. We were left with no instructions whatsover. I guess they don't want anyone tinkering with it. When we arrived the pool was ice cold. We called villadirect and they sent someone out in one hour to turn it on, but it did take about 12-18 hours to fully heat up. We did use the pool cover and that helped a great deal. The interesting thing is that the pool cover was in the garage. When they came to turn on the heat, there was no mention of using it. We were there with 2 DH's who are pretty handy, and they figured it out and pulled it from the garage to the pool. But again, we were baffled with the lack of instruction- we are from the northeast and have no experience with a backyard pool at all!

Our house on the other hand, was very sound proof- no problems whatsoever with noise from outside or other bedrooms.

Great feedback...we owned a home in Emerald Island and it took us several trips to figure out the alarm system...Pool heat is really helped by the cover and should have been explained to you...Any owner who does not have a cover is spending lots of extra $$$ to heat the pool.

Go Badgers...us Hawkeyes will be just up the road in Orlando cheering for you!!
