i just booked for August ( got a 30% discount!!!) i was interested in getting a preffered room but was told they dont have anymore available for those dates, so i booked standard room.
is it such a big difference from one room to the other?

The only difference is location. We stayed at ASMus last year in a standard room that was about as far away as you can get. It means an extra 3 minute walk to the busses in the morning. All the buildings are exactly alike, with the exception of the family suites.

so would you stay in another standard room again? is it that bad of a walk?

I have stayed in a standard room (Home Run) and preferred (Surf's Up) building. Considering the amount of walking that you do in WDW, the minimum additional distance to a standard room is minimal. While it was nice to have a quick trip to get coffee in the morning, it was just as nice to have a quiet early morning walk, when I stayed in the Home Run building, which is the farthest out at All Star Sports.

Just a note, I didn't pay extra for a preferred room, it was given to us at check-in. I wouldn't pay an extra $10 (or is it more) per day to have the preferred room.

My family and I stayed at ASM a few years ago with a standard room and it worked great. The walk isn't bad at all. Have fun!
