I can't stop crying. My son bridged to Sr. Weeblo in Scouts tonight and all of the pictures I took with my Nikon D60 are now gone. :headache: I was able to play them back while I was there but when I got home and put the memory stick in my computer....GONE. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a common occurance with this camera? I just got it in March and now I'm afraid to take it anywhere again.

DO NOT take any more pics on that stick. You can get a file recovery program and may be able to get them back (if you haven't taken pics over them.)

(I had a similar thing once with my old Sony. DH is the geek of the family and found the program. {Unfortuantely he's not home.} I'm sure someone else will pop in with the file, just wanted to mention not taking more on the card in the meantime.)

Good luck!

Like the previous poster said - do not shoot over the card and do not reformat. I had a 1TB hard drive go down last September (it was a $4200 data recovery bill btw!!) and we didn't touch the drive, we didn't do anything. We just boxed it up and shipped it directly to data recovery. The guy who handled our account said that it is usually the stuff that people DO to the card/drive/etc that ends up messing everything up and they can't recover. If you don't do anything, you should be able to get the data off.

I'm unfamiliar with any programs or DIY (I'm sorry - I'm no help there!), but I just wanted to stress the previous poster and give you hope that you will end up eventually getting the data. Hopefully some others will be able to post some good programs or steps. :)

Don't panic too much yet!

I'm hoping someone can offer a DIY program. It is only 10 pictures but they were so important. It was his first flag retirement ceremony. In fact as we pulled off he said that he can't wait to show the pictures to Papaw. GGrrrrrr! Luckily the lady at Tech Support at Nikon told me not to use the card again. We are going out tomorrow to get me a new one. Thanks for letting me vent and giving the info guys.

Quite a few free file recovery programs out there you can download - just do a Google search, find one that sounds good to you, and try it out. If that one doesn't work try another.

We had a card in our Nikon P&S die while at WDW in December - took pictures, we could flip through them on the camera afterwards, but when the card was full and changed it and got home nothing came up on the card at all like they never existed. I tried two or three programs but nothing showed up (lots of older pictures that had been taken and reformatted DID show up, though, so the program worked well). Card was just dead, images gone. Luckily there weren't many as most I take on the SLR.

Check the card manufacturer for refund/warranties, too.

download this program, the photo recovery section is free

I've used it to recover photos from a card that had been emptied and formatted...

after installing, open the program,, on first screen click next....

on second screen pick recover images from memory card

on third screen pick the drive for the memory card

My sister recently lost all the photos on her card too.. the two (free) recovery programs that worked the best for me were the one MICKEY88 mentioned, and PhotoRec

I had a card go bad about 18 months ago. I was able to recover all the pictures (about 300) using one of the recovery programs.

Once you get them back. Put the card in a safe place like the trash (or flush it down the toilet). Then go out and buy a new card.

While this is not something that happens on a regular basis, it does happen. Based on how many times it happens, its not something to worry about. Just know that when it does, don't do anything with the card till your ready to use the recovery program.

Don't let it spoil your picture taking.

Thank you so much for the step by step. I downloaded the program. It is working on its 7th hour. Hopefully it is finding my picures. Does it typically take this long?

Another very very stupid question...but can you still see the pics on the memory card if you put it back in your camera?

If so, you may want to try hooking up your camera directly to your computer by USB cable, and seeing if you can manually transfer them to your computer that way (it will open up your camera as if it is another drive on your computer - you just open that drive, and the subfolders, until you see the photo files, then click-and-drag them to a folder on your C drive).

If not...then the photo recovery programs already mentioned are your best hope.

length of time depends on 2 things..size of card and speed of connection

a card reader is best and the first time i used the program it took many hours.. I then realized my pc at the time was usb1

I installed a usb2 card and the recovery process was much faster,

my new pc is way fast when running the program
