Does anyone have pics of the roomette? What kind of bedding do they provide?

There is a pic on the Amtrak website, otherwise you can search online, including youtube. They provide, sheets, blanket and pillow in rooms. We are bringing our own pillows as the ones they provide are pretty flat. ;)

Here is the amtrak page about the roomette with a plan, photos, and a panoramic:

Here is a parge about the accomodations:

Here is a good video of a superliner roomette which is the same as used on the auto train.

The upper bed is folded upward against the wall & roof. When the room attendant makes up your bed, he folds down the upper bed which has a mattress already made up with sheets and blanket. On top of that is an extra thin mattress also already made up with sheet and blanket. The car attendant will fold the seats down to make the lower bunk and will then place the thin already made up mattress across the lower bunk. This mattress, although thin, provides enough extra padding so you do not feel the joints in the lower bunk/seats.

Heading southbound now on my first auto train trip! So far all is great. Train was late getting in just before 11 but they hsd everyone on there way by 12:15 and we boarded normally and pulled out a little early. Found out we could wait outside so we sat on a bench right by our sleeper car. At the wine and cheese tasting, which included cookies and veggies I went downstairs and had the lower level to myself!

Anxious to hear about as I travel to FL in 3 weeks. How full was the train? My first time also, so any tips would be great!

Too many tips to list again. There are tons in this thread. Everything from when to arrive, check in, room vs coach, what to bring on board, etc. The list goes on and on. I would suggest starting with page 1 and just reading the entire thread over the next week or two.:rotfl2:

Or, you could just ask specific questions and you'll get answers. We're going on our 5th roundtrip in Nov and there are many others here who are also veterans.

Ok, I have a few questions. I'm in a lower level roomette. Where do you get ice and hot water for tea? Is it upstairs or down? Have you ever had the meal delivered to the room? Is the wine and cheese hour before the train departs? I have issues with my knee on stairs so concerned about stair climbing while the train is in motion. Thank you in advance.

The wine & cheese runs from about 3-4. If everything is running on time the train will be out of the station before 4. I really don't recall if hot beverages are available from the lower level but I do think ice/water is.

In each car containing rooms/roomettes, coffee/tea/ice is located on the second level - at the top of the stairs. There is a small water dispenser at the bottom of the stairs on the first level. There is not a lot of ice available ie....not enough to fill a cooler, but plenty for iced beverages. Coffee/tea/snacks are also available in the lounge car.
There are normally 2 bottles of water in each room/roomette. Extra bottles of water are sometimes available at the coffee station in each car.
Cheese & veggie trays & wine are complimentary and are available from about 3pm to 4:00pm in the lounge car.
Speak to the steward for your car, and you can make arrangements for your meals to be brought to your room. Not sure if they will be able to bring you cheese/veggies from service before the train departs. The stairs are narrow but there are railings on both sides to hold on to.

Thank you for answers to my burning questions. I just wanted ice for my travel water bottle.I was told to call a day ahead for dinner arrangements. I'll go to the lounge for some cheese and snacks before the train departs. Thank you again!

Anyone been lately or have any questions? This thread gets easily lost with all the flying and driving threads. We leave in 48 days and can't wait.

Can anyone who has been on the auto train recently let me know what movies they are showing in the Lounge car?

I would just call and ask if they know what the schedule is. We were not crazy about the quality of the movies and just preferred to watch them on a laptop or portable player.

That's what we do too. The movie is shown on small tv's mounted in the wall and between the size and noise, it's hard to watch. We always bring a movie we haven't seen. When we're in a room (which we are going this trip) we can easily hear it and stop and start as needed. In coach (which we currently are returning), we have a splitter and each wear earphones.

I think the movie's change monthly, but not 100% sure.

We left Lorton at 3:45 pm and arrived in Sanford at 1015 am this morning. CSX trains had issues and dramas. Got to Florence at 1220 am. Lots of signal issues also. Got my car in about 45 mins

Unfortuntely, this happens from time to time. I think 10:30am is about the latest we ever arrived. I have heard of an occasional AutoTrain that didn't arrive until late afternoon/early evening, but that is the exception.

We came into Lorton once at 11:30. It was all rail traffic related. Our last couple of trips have been great. FYI, AT on the weekends tends to be on time more often as there is less freight traffic then. We've been late into Florence a couple of times, but tend to make the time up. We've sat in one spot through most of dinner too. It's just part of the deal when Amtrak uses the CSX tracks.

We have arrived past 1:00 before. The worst part was being hungry since the breakfast they serve is lite and over at 7:00 am. They had some stuff for sale in the lounge car, but it was not good. We headed to the gift shop in the station as soon as we arrived for a snack while waiting on our car. We did bring snacks on board too, but with three kids they went fast. I would highly recommend some protein snacks to everyone!

Protein bars, nuts, etc are good ideas. Breakfast is mostly carbs so you will get hungry fast.
