Algebra 1 hon. HELP!!!

I have a math problem that I just can't figure out.


This problem is to solve each system using elimination.
IF ANYONE CAN HELP PLZ

the problem is: -3x + 8y = 10
5x + 6y = 80

So I need help with the first step. 6 times (what?) = -8 (yes it is supposed to be negative)

WEll im not up to this yet but im gonna give it a shot
-3x + 8y =10
5x + 6y = 80
add those together and you get
2x+14y=90
x+7y=45
y=5- (one seventh x)


well i tried but i havent done this yet.

times the top by 5 and the bottom by 3. that should help. i just did this and did really good in the unit so if ya still need help PM me.

Ok....so for the first one...

-3x + 8y = 10
To solve x, set y to 0
-3x + 8(0) = 10
Y cancels out
-3x = 10
Divide by -3
x = -3.33

For y
-3(0) + 8y = 10
8y = 10
divide by 8
y = 1.25

SECOND EQUATION
5x + 6y = 80
Solve for x
5x + 6(0) = 80
divide by 5
x= 16

Solve for y
5(0) + 6y = 80
y= 13.3

HTH! Your instructions were not too clear, so this is what I assumed you were doing. If not, I'm sorry. lol

(3)5x + 6y = 80

and get:
-15x+40y=50
15x+18y=240

Try going from that. That should help now.

the problem is: -3x + 8y = 10

We just did this in school

5(-3x+8y=10)
3(5x+6y=80)

-15x+40y=50
15x+18y=240

58y=290
divide both sides by 58

y=5

5x+6(5)=80
5x+30=80
minus both sides by 30

5x=50
divide both sides by 5

x=10

Wow, I just realized that my memory of algebra 1 is not so good...and I only took it last year! Wow, I am lucky that we barely do this stuff in geometry...or else I would be doomed!

Yeah thats about how I feel. I would've simplified one of the problems and isolated the x or the y to do the other.
