Hi everyone-
If you are planning on flying out soon, please contact your airline before you leave for their policy on carry on luggage. Some airlines, as of today, in response to the war, have limited carry ons. They are saying the following:
One bag per passenger, plus one personal item such as briefcase or purse.

Each airline may have different rules, but it is best to call and check. This is in response to all the heightened security, and now it is at it's highest point!

Thanks for the heads up, flying circus. I have to leave to go to school for Wal*Mart next Sunday (not something I am looking forward to (school not flying), most especially in light of the day's happenings. He** I cannot check, I don't even know who Wal*Mart is flying me on.

Hey, flyingcircus, a quick question...
With the new carry-on restriction, do you know if airlines will tend to be more picky about the size of the bag? Hubby and I have carry-ons that don't fit in the sizer but that do fit under the seat. United and American never give us grief, but ATA always tries to force me to check it until I offer the challenge: I'll check it if it doesn't fit under the seat (I always win). We'll be on United in Nov., and I'm wondering if maybe they tightened the rules. We can usually fit what we need for a 3-day cruise into the carry-ons, but I don't really want to cause trouble by issuing a challenge at the airport now.

The one carryon and one purse/briefcase is no longer per airline. As of the news this evening, the FAA has mandated this.

I'm surprised that United allows you a carryon that won't fit in the sizer. United was the airline that literally forced Denver International to put size templates on the x-ray machines at security - if the bag doesn't fit thru the template, then you have to go back and check it. Most of the other airlines weren't as anal about this as United, but since United is the 900lb gorilla at DIA, the airlines operating out of B and C terminal didn't have much choice (except for the airlines flying out of terminal A; United doesn't rule terminal A, Frontier does).

My suggestion though would be that if it doesn't fit in the sizer, it should be checked. Having large carryons slows down security just as much as having multiple carryon's.

Hi-since we'll be flying out of DIA how do we know if our carry on will fit through the sizer-I don't want any surprises at security. We have a new Samsonite carry on that according to Samsonite is a legitimate size. How can I make sure? If I check with the airline can they give me measurements to be sure? Thanks!

Joy, most carriers have the sizes on their web site--start there. Otherwise, yes, call them and they can tell you the max size.

United's web site says carryons cannot exceed 9x14x22 and no more than 50lbs. When you put your carryon on the x-ray machine, it will need to be no more than 9" high and 14" wide.

Thanks-when my daughter wakes up I'm going to go upstairs with the tape measure and make sure our new carry on is within those measurements. I'm assuming if Samsonite says it is-it should be but I don't want any surprises.

I got another question-I guess I'll probably call United on this one. My daughter has asthma and the doctor told us to take her nebulizer with us in case she has trouble-for those of you that don't know what it is it's a little machine that pumps out air-that goes through a mask that contains medicine for her to breath in. He said to take it in the carry on since obviously we don't want to risk losing our luggage with it inside or having it damaged. He gave me a letter stating it was for medical purposes and should be allowed on the plane. But with the heightened security-do you think we'll have any trouble getting it through security??

call the airline to be certain, but I would not expect you to have a problem with a nebulizer, especially since you have a letter from your doctor. Security will even let needles thru if you have a letter from your doctor.

you will be fine with the nebulizer. PLEASE, PLEASE bring it with you. DO NOT CHECK IT!!
Just have the Dr.'s note with you.

As far as carry on items go, my inflight handbook states" carry on item must be of a reasonable size(defined as 45 linear inches or 112.5 cm, the sum of the length, width, and height)". This is for United, but I suspect it is the same for other airlines as it is in compliance with FAR 121.589 (FAA regs).

That being said,of course they don't weigh it if you are getting on the plane. As long as something fits under the seat, or there is room in the overhead bins, it should be fine. The problem I forsee is getting it thru security in the 1st place!

Barb, I think you will probably have a problem now. But if I remember correctly, you are leaving in November- they might switch back to 2 bags. I will try to keep you informed, as I am leaving on Thursday.

If someone familiar with Denver Int'l would please fill us in...

Is the baggage sizer mask in the X-Ray machine oval or with notches so a suitcase handle or wheel that is beyond the 14 or 9 inch dimension will still fit through, when the suitcase itself is 14 x 9 or smaller?

Well, not to argue but I've not seen such templates at Logan, LAX or Manchester. It could be that it's just the airlines I've been flying that don't have them. I recall reading about the DIA templates in the newspaper; United was the carrier pushing for them, and I seem to remember that Continental threatened to sue United if they were put on the machines for terminal A (back when Continental had most of the gates on terminal A). Not saying that United was wrong in wanting them, just relating how I remember them coming about at DIA.

This is what Southwest's website says about the new carryon policy:

New FAA mandated carryon policy:
In keeping with new security directives from the FAA, strict limits are being imposed on carryon items.
Airline passengers may now carry only one bag plus one smaller, personal-type item onboard the airplane.
Bag dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches.
Personal-type items include purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included).
Assistive devices for qualified Customers with disabilities will not be considered carryon or personal items and may be brought onboard the flight in addition to the above.
A child restraint device for a child who has been ticketed or who has a seat reserved will not be considered a carryon or personal-type item and may be carried onboard.
All Customers' and Employees' items are subject to a thorough, physical search.

Read the same thing-

Continental uses (well used) its liberal carry on policy as a sales tool. They spent many many dollarss putting larger overhead bins on their planes. So they dont use the sizers anywhere they are running security and they do sue when others try to impose that on their customers.

Continental's revised policy states:

The Federal Aviation Administration, as part of the heightened security now in effect, has restricted carry-on baggage to one bag plus one personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop computer, backpack, personal aid devices (such as crutches or cane), etc.) per passenger. This restriction is designed to help minimize security screening delays.

Baggage that is carried on board must easily fit within the sizing boxes (L x W x H dimensions 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm) which are located at Continental’s ticket counters and departure gates. The maximum combined weight of all carry-on baggage is 40 lbs (18 kg). The maximum combined linear measurement (L + W + H) of all carry-on baggage is 45 inches (114 cm).

Additional carry-on Baggage restrictions may apply on certain flights.

I measured our new Samsonite carry on-it's one of those 2 piece ones-one on wheels and then the shoulder bag that attaches to the handle and sit's on top of the one on wheels. The large one on wheels is EXACTLY 9 X 14 X 22! Whew!! Looks like it just makes it as long as I don't stuff the outside pockets! Thanks for all the help!


Flying Circus-I saw you're in Littleton. Do you work for one of the airlines? I used to work for United in the Data Processing until we had our daughter 5 years ago-now I stay at home with her.

Hi Joy!

Yes, I am a flight attendant with United- for almost 16 years. I have aDD7 today and a DD3. We are going to the Backstreet Boys concert tonite at the Pepsi center for her bday!

Your samsonite bag should be fine. Unfortunately a lot of those roller board suitcases are larger than regulation. You should see mine right now- stuffed to the gills! We are leaving for a 7 day cruise on the magic, and all my things have to fit in one suitcase!Can't believe I did it- of course goodness knows how wrinkled they will be when I get to the cruise! If they look in my bag at the airport, which I am sure they will do, stuff is going to come flying out! I hate to bring suitcases on the plane, but I am flying standby and the flight is oversold.

When are you leaving for your trip? The north side of security isn't as crowded as the south side!
