sadly, more than anything, this will hurt the port vendors. We ALWAYS bring back our import limit in Caribbean rum or Mexican tequila. Not anymore. I'm not through the hassle of waiting in yet more lines...

But aren't we supposed to take liquor off in carryon anyway, to go through customs? I only bought liquor once, and it was on Royal. We got it the night before, but we were told clearly to take it off in carryon. Figured customs is customs and it would be the same for DCL.

Never ever been told that I have to carry off liquor in a carry on bag. You have all of your bags with you when you go through customs so I don't see why it would be relevant. I can't see that it's a customs rule. After all, you don't take it off a plane in your carryon (at least not any more) so I see no reason that it would be necessary from a ship.

Well Ive only had it relevant for me once, with guavaberry rum from Sint Maarten, and we were told to carry it off.

You don't always have your bags with you. Both Royal and Disney have their programs where bags go to the airport without you. You say goodbye to them the night before disembarkation and greet them again at your home airport. We've only done it with Disney bc it's free (we don't generally pay for bags bc of dhs work travel) but not with royal bc they charge on top of any airline fees. It was a Royal cruise, so we made sure there was room in a big bag but hand-carried off the liquor then put it in the bag once we were through customs.

My experience, and the post you quoted was mainly question. I'm open to having my experience not be the norm. It's just what we were told.

but if your flying you have no choice but to pack it in your checked luggage. you can't take I on in your carry on.

I don't think this is the only reason they ask you to carry it on - its mainly for the checking aspect (and previously to try and limit how much people are carrying on to the cruise). Most alcohol bottles are fairly resiliant hence why airlines don't insist you don't carry bottles. Trust me bags get thrown around a lot more at airports than at ports.

DCL wants beverages carried on at the beginning of the cruise because DCL has to handle any/all complaints about damage if something breaks in a checked bag. Post-cruise, DCL isn't likely to be fielding those complaints -- the airline is, or at least there would be question of who had possession at the time damage occurred. I agree that bags are tossed around just as much by airlines as the port workers.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere a DCL statement about the new beverage policy saying that if you want to bring bottles home you may not want to take advantage of the OAC program. So, you have to decide.... it is either the convenience of using OAC or the bringing of bottles of booze home from the cruise. Doesn't sound like you can do both unless you leave one bag out of OAC.

No, I only think they throw the bags around when you embark. I think they handle them as gently as you would a newborn baby when you disembark.

Please help me understand the current policy - may my wife and I each pick up 6 beer at a port, bring them up to our suite, then go back out and get another 6 beer each at the same port? Also, we have never cruised back-to-back before, do we pick up any "checked" beer, wine, or liquor from the first half of the back-to-back cruise on the morning of disembarkation while we are still on-board the ship and if so, would there be anything stopping us from taking this beer, wine, or liquor up to our suite before disembarking the ship?

No, you are allowed 2 bottles of wine/champagne (750 ml) OR 6 beers (12 oz) each on embarkation day AND in each port stop. That's one allowance each, not multiple allowances.

No one has reported how the held liquor is handled on a B2B cruise yet. But, even if you are allowed to pick up your bottle of rum (for example) that you bought in port and DCL held until the end of the first cruise. You wouldn't be allowed to bring it onboard on embarkation for the second leg of your B2B, since hard liquor is not one of the items included in the allowance.

Not sure if you must immediately debark the ship once you've picked up your held liquor or not.

No one knows yet but the CM's may or may not remember you bringing your allowance earlier in the day. The spirit of the new policy is only one allowance, will anyone know if you brought more on later in the day is anyone's guess.
