Alcohol Policy Change?

I also am not a "heavy drinker" (and take some exception to that comment). I like quality wine, champagne and scotch. I bring it with me and enjoy it in my cabin. I also purchase wine at dinner and pre-dinner cocktails in the lounge.

For us to drink the quality of wine/champagne we enjoy without brining it onboard we would probably need to spend at least another $500 - $750 on the cruise. .

The mark up is absurd, especially on a nice bottle of wine or champagne.

Definitely no disrespect towards Barb or anyone else on these boards that finds new information and reports it out to all of us quickly. They provide a wonderful service and part of what makes DIS so magical!

After my experience last week though where signals seemed to get confused, I am just going to wait to see if another DCL souce confirms it. Otherwise, I'll sail as planned on 9/25!

I think people are way over reacting to a tweet. When my friend from DCl Shoreside Concierge tells me it is true then I will believe it. I know Barb has been on a ton of cruises on DCL and she is very informed but all this seems a little vague to me. I am really doing a wait and see rather than saying I am never cruising with DCL again. I really don't think it is that big of a deal. This is just my opinion and even though I may not agree with those other opinions on this thread I do respect them.

And what about n/a beer? Sharps is NOT the best near beer... we'd like some options. Even if that is bringing it ourselves.

Bummer for B2B'ers. Guess you would have to call a taxi, go to the liquor store return to the ship, go thru security to carry anything onboard the 2nd leg of your cruise. I wonder if they will let B2B'ers double up on the 1st cruise? I'm just sayin..........

It's me under my own ID now that work has finally settled down for the day. The information on the mailing list originally came from someone who works for Disney; I don't want to get into specifics, but I considered the source reliable enough to announce it in my column. Does that mean it's written in stone? Perhaps not, especially if they get bad feedback. I'm going to ask about it on the ship on my 9/11 sailing and will post an update unless anyone hears anything sooner.

This would definately make me rethink my "I'll only cruise Disney" policy. Hoping this ends up being a misunderstanding. I've already got my special wine picked out for my 10/8 cruise.

Mine too! Why'd they have to change the policy (if they ARE in fact changing the policy) on the 19th - ONE day before our cruise?! LOL!

I'll keep a close eye on the policy on the DCL website, as well as this thread, and unless there's a change ON THE WEBSITE, then I will continue as planned. Either way, I'm NOT letting this ruin our honeymoon!

Well, we sail on 9/15 so we'll be carrying on Crown & Parrot Bay. As for future cruises, we rarely ever drink. If I can't carry alcohol onboard with me it's not a deal breaker....but Mickey should know it won't encourage me to spend on overpriced drinks onboard either. I'll just not drink alcoholic beverages. Not the end of the world for us.

I've only ever been on Disney, and my Husband and I both drink. I'm a drink of the day maybe a cocktail at dinner drinker, he on the other hand made VERY good use of the beer mug purchase and refills. Even with the price of Disney cruise's being more than other cruise lines, I can't imagine cruising anywhere else. I'm willing to pay for the Disney experience every time or not go at all.

Never have cruised on Disney before, but here’s my 2 cents worth.

I understand that the sale of adult beverages on a cruise is a big money maker. So I understand if Disney chooses to change the policy. (not happy but I understand) My beef would be that they should change it for cruises in the future. NOT for cruises that have gone past the 75 day, “paid in full” mark. Everyone should have the chance to change their minds if they wish.

I was not raised in a "drinking home"...nor do I have alcohol in my home today...so I guess it just shocks me when I read a thread such as this.

Granted it is cheaper to bring your own booze onboard but currently I do not find the prices on DCL outrageous for "by the glass" drinks....I do think they mark up the wine bottle prices heavily.

I find cocktails less expensive onboard than in most land based bars/lounges.

We will all have to see how it plays out but it would certainly not deter me from cruising with DCL.

That's exactly how I feel about the alcohol. The wine mark-up is huge, but the mixed drinks (which is usually what I have) are not marked up badly at all. Not gonna impact us much at all.

I've found prices for the drinks I drink to be about the same price as on land, guess here in NJ the beer at concerts is the same price as on the ship, also when I saw a concert at House Of Blues in Myrtle Beach beer was the same price, now when I saw blink182 at PNC Art Center, lets just say I wish I was on the ship to get beer for a lower price

Not change vacation plans, just re-budget. I like certain wine that DCL does not have onboard, so I bring my own. I only bring enough for a week, maybe 3 bottles. I always purchase beer and drinks onboard, the wine is just my taste preference, and its always in my stateroom I do not bring it to dinner with me. I pour a glass and smoke a cigar either on my verandah or on deck 10.

I have cruised with other lines, and did without my wine, but DCL always gave me the chance to bring it so I do.

The two bottle limit really will not affect me that much, its just the point I have paid for my cruises in December, and at the time of final payment, there was no limit to the amount I could bring onboard.

I noticed the date of this "new policy" is the day after we set sail on the DVC Members Cruise, September 18th!! DCL would have ticked off A LOT of people had they enforced this earlier!! Kind of funny....just a bit ironic I guess.

If Disney wants everyone to buy their booze at an outrageous markup, they should reduce the price of the cruise and make it commensurate with Celebrity and other similar lines.

Exactly!!! We own a bar, so I get the mark ups on everything- That said, I enjoy expensive wines that would be twice if not more the price of a bottle. We also, buy a bottle wine at dinner with our party- It has nothing to do with being "big drinkers" (i will say, however, my dh is a big man so I guess that makes him a big drinker)
