Alcatraz - do I need to book?

Not long now until I go to California for the first time! I will be in San Francisco for four days from 12th August with my DH and two teenage kids. We would like to visit Alcatraz and as it is peak season I want to know should I book before we go and if so who with?

There is only one National Park authorized ferry . . . you can reach them through http://www.nps.gov/alca/planyourvisit/feesandreservations.htm

Book directly with them . . .

Thats great thank you! I just looked and all the tour options are available for all the days we will be there so I'll be booking very soon.

Night tour recommended and book as fast as you can.

I have now booked the night tour for our second day in San Francisco. It looks like a great tour and as the evening one comes so highly recommended I got in quickly!
