Has anyone here been to Alaska? I am finally getting there next year on a photography oriented trip. :cool1: Do you know about things in the typical cruise ports like:
  • wildlife (not going to Denali)
  • interesting off the beaten path places
  • must see places

Any and all tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

we did an alaska cruise in 2004 and had such a fantastic time! you're going to love it!

as for the photography... we went to the following ports: ketchikan, juneau, and skagway.

in ketchikan, a lot of people went to the logging show, which is supposed to be really fun. we didn't though. we spent time walking around taking pictures of the town and the totem poles. other members of our family did some hiking that day and they loved it. i don't know where they went, but it was somewhere the cruise recommended.

in juneau we took the trolley to the top of the mountain and did some hiking up there. it was an amazing view of the town and they even had a bald eagle in captivity up there. some of our family went to the mendenhall glacier for some hiking this port. the pictures again were so awesome!

we had a stop at tracy arm and saw the glaciers there, which were incredible. we had to be up at 5 am or so, but it was so worth it. be sure to have a super zoom lens if you want some detailed pictures of the glaciers, because you don't get that close to them. we did see a random mountain goat on the hills here, which we thought was hilarious. they had naturalists out this day explaining the types of animals you'd be likely to see in that area.

in skagway some of our family went on the train ride and they said the ride was awesome (it was 80$ pperson). they had some pretty cool pictures that they brought back of the scenery in skagway. in the port area there were lots of brooks with tons and tons of salmon. it was interesting to watch them try to swim upstream and jump out of the water. next to the boat my mom and i got pictures of a mama seal and her baby.

the cruise ship constantly had naturalists on the decks trying to spot any whales or dolphins. we saw one whale one of our days at sea. it was very hard to see however.

be sure to have a zoom lens, a lot of the time you will see animals very very far away. i wish i had a better camera when we went, because i would have many nicer pictures (i guess that's a good reason to go back again! haha.).

hope this helps a little. maybe look into purchasing an alaska book, my dad got one on our cruise and it has a ton of great information in it about each port. we loved alaska and i wouldn't hesitate to go back!

Thanks for the info, I am very excited about going!

Oh Alaska sounds wonderful!

Is this cruise just for photographers? Or are you doing this on your own?

Went to Alaska on the Princess Coral last Sept out of Vancouver. Here are some of the scrapbook pages that I did. I only took pictues of around 60 but scrapbooked 212 pages. It was the most awsome trip of a life time. In fact we are going back again this Sept to do the things we didn't get a chance to do last year.

Ketchikan we did a nature trail and that is where I got to take pictures of the Salmon jumping up stream.

Juneau we did a Whale watching/Mendenhall tour, then a Salmon Hatchery/Mendenhall tour/salmon dinner.

Skagway I wanted to take the train up the mt. But DH didn't want to (guess what were doing this coming up Sept..:) We took a nature tour in Haines which was for the most part a bust. Weather wasn't the greatest, but we got some cool pictures of some Eagles!!!

Check out Cruise Critic. com they been alot of help with the planning of our trips.

We took a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage in July 2003 for our 20th. It was wonderful and beautiful and all that. BUT, the best was the salmon bake we went to. The salmon were spawning in this stream about 6 feet across. On the other bank was a momma and baby bear and I got a shot (blurry unfortunately) of the baby grabbing a huge salmon from the stream. Very cool - I think it was ketchikan. So, I would say always be ready for those "nature shots" you never expect. Getting good one of whales is really hard.

The cruise is not just for photographers, but people can sign up to spend time with a professional photographer who is going. He will teach classes and go on excursions with everyone. If you email or PM me, I will give you the details.

I would be thrilled to SEE a bear (never mind a mom and baby)grabbing a salmon out of a stream, never mind getting a picture of it! That must have been very exciting!

Been there, done that!

The best place to see bears eating salmon is at Brooks Falls. It's quite the adventure, just to get there!

Be sure to take a dog sled ride on a glacier via helicopter.

A visit to Alaska is not complete without visiting Denali, preferably in an overnight back country lodge.

All of these things are very expensive, but each are an awesome unforgettable adventure.

Enjoy the cruise, but take one more step beyond the average tourist.

Great info, thanks! I will be going on a cruise to Alaska in 2009 too. Pigletspal , great SB LO's!

I just got the Nikon D80 for Christmas with the 18 - 135 lens. I have a 35-70 nikkor lens that does AF with the D80 and Tokina 70 - 210 and Samyang 18-28 lenses that I would have to manually focus. Does anyone have any recommendations what I should get or bring on this trip?

Okay now you got me really excited for my cruise to Alaska in August this year :cool1: :cool1: Just ordered my new zoom lens for my camera, I hope to capture alot of wildlife pictures.

Lachsis ( might have spelled that wrong) who pops in here sometimes used to live there and has fantastic shots of alaska..maybe do a search for her name...i know she posted some not long ago and had at one time posted some collages...really beautiful stuff
