Hi All!

As of today we have exactly two weeks until we will be sitting on the deck of the "Wonder"ful Disney Wonder while she swiftly sails from the Canada Place dock and out into the open sea. Wow, that sounded poetic and literate didn't it? What I meant to say is: "Two weeks from today I will be black and blue from pinching myself and will be tucking into my dessert right about now".

No, that's not quite the right way to put it either, so I will give it one more try... In just two weeks my DH and I will be going bye-bye on the great big boat and I am stupidly excited! There, that’s better...

Now, before I get the cart not just before the horse but before the whole dang herd, I had best introduce the players: There's me, Tisza, former Disneyland, Studio and Imagineering Castmember, my DH, Mel, a major ham radio geek (and I say that in the most loving and reverent way possible :-) and our 10 nearest and dearest, ranging in age from turning 8 on the cruise to significantly older than that.:rotfl:

I originally booked this trip about a year and a half ago and I have been eagerly anticipating it ever since. I have been keeping myself busy by working on FE items (yes, I really did start making things over a year ago), collecting images for our door magnets, reading everything I can get my hands on about our destination and also everything that all those who have gone before, and been kind enough to share, have had to say about Alaska.

We all live here in Sunny Southern California, within about 8 miles of each other give or take. Oh, and did I mention that some of the folks in my group will be flying to Vancouver about half of us will be driving! In fact, my DBF and her family have already set out on their epic drive as they will be making several stops along the way and are also planning to spend about two weeks in Canada pre-Cruise.

As for the DH and myself, we will be hitting the road with a vengence in just 10 days! Giving ourselves four days between departure from our door to arrival at Canada Place. We do have a couple of stops slated along the way (like visiting my DSS, his wife and our grandkids :)). At this point we are looking at taking Highway 395 up a good portion of the way through central California as it is a prettier drive AND it passes through Bishop which is the home of Schat’s Bakkery (yes, that is how they spell it :)), which, in turn is the home of the “Original Sheepherder’s Bread”. If you have never been there you don’t know what you are missing and if you have been there then you know why I am excited about being able to stop in.

They have about ten bazillion different types of bread in addition to the Sheepherder’s variety and tons of other tasty treats. They also have a sandwich counter in the back of the shop which makes sandwiches that make Subway, Quizno’s and all the rest hang their heads in shame, slink into a corner and quietly weep. Can you tell that I am excited about stopping by this place?

But, more about them later (like when we actually get there :rotfl:)... This is my VERY FIRST EVER PRE-TRIP REPORT (Yes, I am intentionally shouting!) and I am thrilled beyond belief to be able to do one.

To bring everyone up to speed on where we are in the planning and preparation stage right now, I have successfully completed construction of all my Fish Extender goodies (I got a little overzealous here and have managed to produce about 50 too many of one item but they sure were fun to make), packaging of all of them and packing them into their very own suitcase. The suitcase is completely filled to the brim and, as of right now, is the only one that I have fully packed but the pile in my bedroom of items that will be joining us on our adventure is growing by leaps and bounds on practically an hourly basis.

I also got a screaming good deal on a laminator ($12.99 including around 90 pouches!) and have been making magnets for all the doors of everyone in my group like they are going out of style. Since I have been requesting DISigns form DISigners, and collecting clip art on my own for the past year and a half narrowing the chosen artworks down to a reasonable level has been no mean feat. But it has been really fun and has inspired me to get good enough with all of the snazzy graphics programs I have at my disposal to consider attempting to do some DISigning of my own for folks in the future. Turn about is fair play, right?

Today we received our official “Your Cruise Is Almost Here” email from DCL. :cool1: I don’t recall getting anything like this before our first Disney Cruise to the MR in 2005. I did find it interesting to see that, at least in the email that we received, formal wear was listed as optional and no mention was made of jeans not being welcome in the dining rooms. It does however tend to read as a bit of Polar opposite (pun definitely intended) list. It mentions bringing jeans, shorts, hiking boots, warm coats, gloves and swimsuits. I half expected to see it suggest that I remember to bring my micromini dress to wear with my mukluks!

As for packing, at this point, we are... correction I am, because the DH’s actual contribution to the packing effort will be carrying the bags to and from the car, doing all that I can to pack us as light as I can get away with and still have all our necessary bases covered.

For anyone interested, my packing list is as follows: Jeans for both, one sweatshirt for each, one warm jacket for each, one fleece top for each, socks and undies for each (the oldest, rattiest ones as they will be making a one-way journey, however I will be wearing the good ones on my travel days to and from the ship just to keep my mom happy LOL), one pair of dockers for the DH, his suit for formal night, semi-formal night (slacks, shirt and tie only) and for dinner at Palo, my evening gown, an additional “dressy” dress, one pair of black slacks, a variety of dressier tops, my Mickey Mouse sweater, two pairs of shoes (dress shoes, & hiking boots) in addition to those that he will be wearing while traveling; three pairs of shoes for me (heels, Uggs, hiking boots) in addition to my traveling sneaks, and a swimsuit for each of us (which probably won’t ever see the light of day let alone the water of a pool, but it wouldn’t be a proper vacation without them along).

There you have it. My packing list as it stands currently.

As for the balance of my PTR, I am going to try to post an entry a day before we depart on the actual cruise on July 19.

I am planning to do an actual TR on the voyage itself but will most likely be doing that after we return home. As I am also quite the shutterbug (as is the DH) I will be including pictures of every interesting thing that I can wrap my lens around.

I hope every one enjoys reading this as much as I shall enjoy crafting it.

Until tomorrow, take care all, help lots of people and have a “Wonder”ful day!

Enjoying your report- we go on Aug 9th so I will be very interested in the weather you have. Earlier reports indicated cold, rain, cold, rain, cold, rain. I hope you have better weather and we do , too!

Hi All!

MassDisLovers, thanks for stopping by and for your kind words. I will be sure to keep everyone posted as soon as I can about weather, etc...

Now... On to today's installment... I started today by having my DH jump out of bed spitting nails because he had waaay overslept. He had a whopping 15 minutes to shower, shampoo and shine. Oh, and he needed to eat something and iron a shirt.

Now, I am soooooo not a morning person it is not even funny. My brain doesn't even start working until the day hits double digits. But, being the nice wife I sometimes am, I tumbled out of bed and stumbled to the kitchen where I not only poured my DH a cup of ambition, I also made him some oatmeal and ironed his shirt. I am pleased to report that he made it out the door darned close to his usual time and was on time to work - amazing!

After the DH's morning debacle (which I was only really sure occurred when I called him later to verify that it wasn't a particularly vivid bad dream:rotfl:), I dragged myself back to bed and when by my reckoning a decent hour had arrived, I rose to greet the day.

And today was the day that was about more packing prep. I decided to get brave and actually try on my formal wear.

On my first Disney Cruise I packed my emergency spare evening gown (Yes, I do travel with an emergency spare evening gown, doesn't everyone?) never actually intending to have to wear it. Wouldn't you know that I wound up forgetting to pack my actual intended first choice gown so I did have to wear my second choice. And, since it WAS my second choice I never actually tried it on before the cruise. BIG MISTAKE! The gown barely fit and I hated how I looked.

So, this time I wasn't going to do that again. I pulled all of my prospects out of the closet and tried them on one by one. Happily, after trying on my first and second choices I am pleased and amazingly they fit!

We will be dressing for dinner on the formal and semi formal nights and for dinner at Palo. Personally, that is part of the fun for us... well, actually mostly for me but he is a really good sport and humors me. :rotfl2:.

The other thing that happened today was that my DH announced that he wanted to start our drive on Thursday night as soon as he gets home from work. I am really happy with this development since I am pretty much ready to toss everything I own into some luggage and sit by the door counting down the minutes until departure. So, getting a 12-hour jump on our originally projected start time is a really good thing.

Unfortunately, he has also decided that we will be going for more of a straight shot right up the 5 Freeway which translates to no stop in Bishop on the way up :sad2:. So, its a good thing that they will be feeding us well on the ship which will ease the loss of my yummy Roast Beef on Sheepherders bread with the homemade dill pickle and the complimentary cookie. Well, there is always the drive back :).

One thing that we are still debating about is whether we will be staying on the Washington or Canadian side of the border the night before the cruise. I think we are leaning toward the Canadian side at this point. So, if anyone has any suggestions for an inexpensive hotel in a safe area I would be much obliged for the info.

I guess tomorrow will have a whole lot of time spent on the internet searching for a hotel in it's future. And, since I am starting to wilt a bit and still need to make the DH's lunch I had best close for the night.

So, with 8 days until we start our drive and 13 days until embarkation, I bid you adieu.

Until tomorrow, take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

Hi All!

Well, so much for posting every day leading up to departure, huh? Ahh, the best laid plans... Things have been getting super busy around here (as they tend to do for everyone with a big bye-bye planned) but that is to be expected.

When last I posted our departure time had been moved up by about 12 hours and I was still debating the wisdom of staying in Washington versus trying to find something inexpensive in Vancouver for the night before the cruise.

At this point, although we aren't planning to try to set any land speed records getting to Washington, but we should be there by sometime late Friday evening. And we have decided to stay on the Washington side of the border the night before since we will be staying in an inexpensive (but known quantity) hotel there instead of taking our chances in another country. (Yes, I know that Canada is probably less like another country than some States are but still...)

We are planning on staying in a Motel 6. I know it isn't glamourous and that there not only won't be a Continental breakfast to look forward to, there probably won't even be any extra tiny soaps, but it will be about one hour from the cruise port as opposed to the over four hours it would take if we stayed with the kids that last night. And, since I tend to live in the land of Paranoia when it comes to things like this, that three hour difference is HUGE!

We are really looking forward to our "trip within a trip" to see my DH's oldest son, his wife and our grand kids for a couple of days before we go on our cruise. The kids are 3 1/2 and 4 9/10's, both great ages and both are really sweet kids. You can bet that I will be on the lookout for special goodies for both of them while we are on our cruise.

As for what else I have been up to... I realized somewhat belatedly that I needed to either come up with a Pirate costume for myself and my DH or blow the whole thing off completely. And, since blowing it off was simply not an option I set off in search of appropriate (and comfortable) garb that would pack somewhat smaller than the full on Rennisaince Faire costumes that we brought on our first cruise.

In truth, the DH was not really comfortable (he doesn't really like being the center of attention, heck he doesn't even really like being the outskirts of attention) so finding him something that would make him fit in without standing out was of foremost importance in my search.

I wound up finding everything that I needed at a couple of different thrift stores including a great Disney tie featuring the Fab Five so now he will truly be "Stylin"!

I have been spending the remaining days between my Pirate clothing search and now working on my packing. Since it is currently somewhere in the high 80's to 90's temp wise here and since my weather research tells me that if we break past 70 degrees it will be an occasion, and since it will be very likely that rain will be a significant part of our trip I am having a bit of difficulty figuring out what needs to go into our suitcase and what needs to stay home.

One thing that will be going is what is left of my pin collection. I used to have a really nice collection but the whole kit and kaboodle was stolen out of my car one day and it kind of took the wind out of my sails for the pastime.

One of the folks in my group is an extremely soon to be 8-year old girl (she will be turning 8 on the cruise) who is a Princess pin collector, another is a major Castle collector and there is also a Tigger collector in the group so if you run across me and want some really cool older, hard to get, cast member only pins and have any of the above I am sure we can do some business.

My DH just got home so I probably need to feed him.

Until our next update, and with just three days left until our departure...

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

Hey Tisza, can't wait to follow along on your adventure...one week and we will be sailing away!! I can't even believe it!!!!!

Hi All!

To bring everyone up to date, when last I wrote there were a few more days to departure and now I am sitting in the selfsame spot a week to the day after we spent our last day in port at beautiful Ketchikan Alaska. There is lots to tell about the trip itself but since this is labeled a Pre-trip report and since there is a whole lot to tell I had best get to it...

I spent the days between the 11th of July and the 15th when we set out on our grand adventure finishing the packing, reading everything that popped up here on DISboards about Alaska, obsessively checking the weather reports, making last minute magnets and having what can only be described as pre-trip panic dreams.

For instance, I dreamed that I was locked out of all of the dining rooms because I was out trying to deliver my FE gifts and my hubby had my dining room tickets and didn't tell me when we were supposed to be or what seating we had. I woke up a little shaken and a bit P.O'd at my poor DH. Don't you just love dreams?

I had similar dreams for the ensuing days and finally got to the point where I decided that sleeping was probably a complete waste of time.

Finally, the day of our departure arrived and my DH arrived home from work. We loaded the car and hit the road. We were underway by 6PM as planned and decided to drive to Los Banos California before we stopped for the night. We were also thanking our lucky stars that we were getting underway before the weekend which was going to be what they were terming "Carmageddon". The 405 freeway was going to be closed completely for the weekend so that they could do bridge repair.

All I kept thinking was that I was super glad that we were not only leaving on Thursday night before things really went to heck in a handbasket but that we hadn't decided to try to fly either. Especially since the area where the freeway was closed encompassed the best offramps for accessing the LAX airport.

We enjoyed an uneventful drive and wound up stopping for the night at the Motel 6 in Santa Niella. The hotel was clean, inexpensive and the beds were relatively comfortable. The next morning we hit the road again and after a sumptious repast provided by the nearby Golden Arches and quick stop at Pea Soup Anderson's so I could visit the bakery for goodies to take to the kids we were underway again by 8 AM.

The drive from California to Olympia Washington where we were going to be spending the first few days of our vacation enjoying the hospitality of our oldest son, his wife and their two adorable kids was absolutely beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen as many trees in my life as I did on that drive.

I spent my time alternately gazing adoringly at the scenery and trying to capture it in pictures. I was more or less successful with my photo taking (photos to be inserted soon) and for anyone who is interested I was shooting my Olympus e-520 using either my 11-22 mm or my 70-300mm using Shutter Priority and shooting at 500 speed to stop the action and counter the 70MPH speed that the car was traveling at.

We arrived in Olympia Friday night at around 11 PM. The following day was spent getting reacquainted with our grandkids and then going with our son down to Seattle to see where he is taking his flight lessons (he is a licensed commercial helicopter pilot and is soon to be a flight instructor as well). While he took his lesson we went down to Pike Place to walk around a bit and eat lunch. We wound up at a bagel shop and had some yummy sandwiches.

The following day was spent enjoying the weather Washington State is famous for. What a revelation for this Native Southern Californian. The folks who live there in Washington just seem to go about their normal day whether it is raining or not. Anyone who has spent any time in my neck of the woods knows that if more than three raindrops actually hit the ground the news programs start breaking into primetime shows with "Storm Watch" updates. So to see families out in the park playing soccer, kids riding bikes and folks walking the streets without umbrellas or even jackets. Amazing... but as usual, I digress...

We decided to take the grandkids (and their parents :-) to the Children's Museum in downtown Olympia and then out to dinner. If you have kids who are under the age of 10 and are looking for a great place to let them blow off some steam and you are anywhere in the vicinity of Olympia Washington, run, don't walk to this place.

In truth, the "museum" part of the museum is almost a misnomer. It is more of a super interactive indoor play area with learning opportunities thrown in than a museum with fun overtones. Dress your kids for action, bring a camera and try not to wish that you were still able to count your age in single digits.

On Monday morning we started our drive toward our intended goal of Bellingham Washington. We arrived in Bellingham at about 9:30 AM and decided that sitting on the American side of the border with Vancouver and Canada Place so tantalizingly close in order to save $20 was probably not the best choice so we got in line to cross into Canada. I drove my poor hubby to distraction when I decided to jump out of the car to take pictures of the Freedom Arch and the floral Canadian flag. Of course, since the traffic was moving slower than molasses in January so there really was no danger when I bailed from the car (and I was not the only or even the first person grabbing these shots).

Incidentally, I needed to find us a hotel in Vancouver since staying there had not been in the plan so we didn't have any specific place in mind. I grabbed my pocket guide to Vancouver (I had been hoping to see a bit of the city either before or most likely after the cruise and had thus purchased the book) and the Victorian Hotel in downtown Vancouver caught my eye.

The Victorian Hotel was originally built in 1898 but has been recently remodeled. I have stayed in hotels similar to this one in San Francisco and was expecting to have a bathroom down the hall. So imagine my extremely pleasant surprise when we opened the door to our room and found that we were sooo not staying in the cheap seats. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have had the pleasure or sleeping on. The bathtub was of the oversized deep soaking variety and there were even lovely fluffy bathrobes waiting in the closet.

The hotel stay also included breakfast in the morning (bagels, toast, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola, coffee and tea) and it was $159 a night. We had the room with the Kingsize bed. The hotel also has a private, gated parking lot which you access with a remote the hotel provides.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walking distance from Canada Place, a couple of blocks from the Steamclock in Gastown and equidistance from China Town.

One thing that we did after we got our room and got a bit settled was to ask the front desk where we SHOULDN'T go in town. She scratched out the entire length of Hastings from Homer to Columbia Streets. The hotel is located on Homer betwen Dunsmuirs and Pender Streets. We hit the streets on foot and I insisted that we had to walk through China Town so we actually wound up seeing a bit of Hastings and I can say that even in broad daylight this is sooooo not a happy neighborhood and after dark I bet it is downright scary. But, we never felt unsafe during our walkabout and really enjoyed getting to see a bit of the city as well!

We even found the Japadog stand right near Canada Place and decided to try their best seller to see what all the fuss was about. The idea of grilled onions, seaweed, mayo and teriyaki sauce on a grilled hot dog really doesn't sound like a good idea but I can tell you that after the first "wow, this is really weird" bite it is all good. If you are not into having a Japanese influenced hotdog, I would still recommend them for a good old fashioned american style snack. The grilled hotdogs are super tasty, far better than those provided by most hotdog carts where the dogs are steamed.

We truly walked all over the downtown, gastown and waterfront areas to not only do a little bit of sight seeing but also to scope out where we would need to be the next day.

Then we hoofed it back to the hotel to drop off our camera gear and we again consulted the front desk for a dinner recommendation and were given two to choose from. A sushi restaurant which we didn't choose and "Steamworks Brewing Company" (not to be confused with Steamwork's the "Men's Club" and bathhouse - I just did a search on the internet to get the restaurant address and first found not beef but beefcake - whoops!) located on Water Street (375 Water Street, Vancouver BC) which we did.

They have a microbrewery for those that enjoy beer, seating inside or on their patio, a view of the harbor and some really good food. My DH had the blackened Sockeye Salmon Ceasar Salad and I had the Indian style Lamb Burger with sweet potato fries.

They are also just up the street from a store that sells nothing but products made with Maple. Canadian Maple Delights 385 Water Street, Vancouver, BC. They have syrup, gelato's, Maple baking sugar, candy, spreads, hot drinks and other treats all made with Maple. Price wise they are about comparable to the other gift shops that were offering the bottled syrups, etc. Actually, they might have been a couple bucks cheaper for the larger sizes. And they packed my syrup bottles really well for the trip home.

For the other foodies out there they have a cute little Maple cookbook for $4.25 CD and will give you another cookbook when you make a purchase. Cool, huh?

After dinner we decided to meander back to the hotel by way of Trees Organic Coffee (450 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC) to sample their cheesecake which has been lauded as the best in Vancouver. Since the DH is something of a cheesecake junkie we had to stop and give this place a try. He had the classic New York with fresh berry topping and I had the Key Lime. He also had a cup of their organic, freshly roasted right there on the premises coffee and I had a lovely cup of hot cocoa.

Now I am a pretty tough judge where desserts are concerned since I pride myself on my dessert making skills and cheesecake is one of my specialties so I admit I walked into the place with a bit of a "prove it to me" attitude. And, boy did they ever! The cheesecake was the perfect consistency and the flavors were bang on the money. This place wasn't cheap (it was almost $20 for everything including tip) but the slices were so generous that they could easily be shared (unless you are traveling with my DH who doesn't share dessert, especially if its cheesecake :-).

We got back to the hotel full, satisfied and ready to start some serious relaxing. A long bath was in order for both of us and I finally shut my eyes at somewhere around midnight.

I was pretty irked when my cellphone woke me at just after 6 AM with a text message. I loved the sentiment, it was my DSS telling me that the grandkids were missing us already, but really wanted to get more sleep. I headed back to bed and gave sleeping for a couple more hours the old college try but abandoned that plan after about 10 minutes when I realized that all I was doing was chanting to myself "we go bye-bye on the boat today" ad nauseum. So, I got up and opened the curtains and when I did I saw a most "Wonder"ful sight, that distinctive smokestack just cruising into port. I shrieked that the ship was here and made a mad grab for my camera. I fired off a few frames (none great or even very well focused as I was barely awake and bouncing around like a certain stuffed tiger we all know and love.

As I watched the stack slid slowly forward and wound up disappearing from view. If I hadn't been awakened when I was and opened the curtains when I did I would have missed the whole thing!

At that point the DH and I were both ready to hit the ground running and we gathered out things, headed down for breakfast and then checked out of the hotel.

To Be Continued...

Continued :-)

We had a parking reservation at Vinci Parking right below the Pan Pacific Hotel so we took the car there and set about finding the Parking office to get checked in.

The office is on P2 way up toward the end of the structure that is closest to the hotel entry point. The elevators in the red housings are the ones that take you to the Cruise Ship (CS on their button panel). We wound up parking and then reparking our car nearest to the elevator that we would be using to return to the structure after our trip.

We grabbed our cameras and headed out to the dock to get some pictures of the ship in port and the port itself as we had some time to kill before the rest of our party arrived. After about an hour or so we headed back down to the parking structure, grabbed a couple of the free luggage carts and loaded them up like we were going on a 10 year safari around the world and not like it would be just 7 days on a ship.

Checking our bags was smooth and painless as was going through customs and security. Then, getting all checked in with DCL was also pretty painless and swift (although they did try to tell us that one member of our party who we KNEW was traveling concierge wasn't. But, clearly that got all straightened out since they got all the concierge bells and whistles (and we even got a few because our reservations were all linked but I am getting ahead of myself...)

We were assigned boarding group 18 and we had enough time to get in line to get our picture with Minnie before they called our group to board.

Finally we heard the boarding announcement for our group, we gathered our carryon's and headed for the gangway...

With that my pre-trip report concludes and the actual trip report can begin. Stay tuned for all of our hijinks on the high seas!

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!
