Alaska in July - is it cold?

Thinking about Alaska next summer. How is the weather? Is it cold? Will the kids be able to swim?

The pools are heated, so yes they can swim, but keep a towel handy for when they get out and feel the cool air.

We went in May and had some lovely weather, I think we were really lucky. The only day it was really really cold was when we at Tracey Arm.

We swam and went in the hot tubs.

We're from Florida - We were on the Wonder in early August 2011, and it never ceases to amuse to see kids in the pool on 65 degree days. But swam they did. Pretty much every day, except on day 3, when it rained and was 45.
You cold weather folks just jump on in! We'll watch!

I was looking at a site for either Skagway or Ketchikan this weekend and, at that time, the temperature was 54! Not what I was expecting. I don't know if that was right or not. 46 is predicted as the high for this Sunday though.

This July will be my 3rd Alaska cruise. The last 2 had very different weather. It was a warm. 70 when we left vancouver but by the first sea day it was cold, windy and only about in the low 50's. the glacier day was sunny beautiful but cold think 40's. Juneau was cold and wet. Skagway was sunny but not much warmer. Ketchican was in the low 60's. the next time a much better scenario and only 2 weeks earlier. We left from Seattle and got sun burned while at port ! The next day a sea day was pretty windy and cold. Juneau was awesome with a high of 72. It was almost to warm with the clothes I had one. Skagway was a bit cold in the am think 50's but by afternoon it was nice and sunny and enjoyed more pool time. The last port was even colder but not what I would call freezing. It reminds me of weather here in florida now . 70 one day. 60's and then 50's. we did use the pool.

Mid 60s is a warm summer day for us in AK-especially after the cold winter months. It can and does get warmer of course, and it tends to be rainy. The best bet is to pack for layers and include a water proof jacket.

We went in August a few years back and had beautiful weather! Barely any rain whatsoever! But we were lucky.
That being said we still had to wear a light coat whenever in port.

We went in mid-June. No rain at all, but it is cool there, especially on the deck when the ship is moving. However, the pools seemed full of kids all day long. The water was definitely heated!

We were there in June a day after the Vernal Equinox and it was warm for us then; so I would think it would be warm in July. But we're from Minnesota, so warm to us may not be warm to you

This is the exact reason I will only go to Alaska on a ship with an enclosed pool area with a retractable roof... Makes for a nice time, get to see the glaciers while still warm.

Both our Alaska cruises were on HAL on the Amsterdam and Westerdam, ships with retractable roofs over the pools, both in June, and during the day they were always open on both ships.
