Alaska HAL vs Princess Lines

I have spent half the day focusing on HAL - Eurodam and Princess - Emerald. DS wants to cruise to Alaska for his HS Graduation present in 2023 I saw that Princess and HAL have the open bids for Glacier Bay so I am going off of the ships sailing there (from Seattle) in 2022 since 2023 rates and ships aren't posted yet. I don't know anything about either line. So I thought I would ask here since someone might have some pros or cons on either (or hopefully both) cruise lines. Thanks!

My sister did princess and spoke highly. My good friend did Holland America and said they do it right. I don’t think you can go wrong with either.

We did the trip (but from Vancouver) in 2018 with 4 teens ages 14-18. According to our travel agent, Princess and HAL are the best choices if Glacier Bay is a must (and it was for us). She suggested that Princess has more stuff geared to the teens -- and they did have some programming, but ours generally stuck together and did their own thing. They did not do many of the planned teen activities (so I can't really speak to that, however I thought that some of the activities sounded kind of fun. Some included free access during certain times to stuff that normally costs extra -- like the smoothie bar or the golf simulator).

We were able to get the drink package as part of a promotion and being able to get fancy coffee drinks and "mocktails" were definitely the hit of the ship for them. They also enjoyed the cookies and hot chocolate that Princess serves in the afternoon.

We were on the Emerald Princess. The Emerald Princess is an older, smaller ship. It doesn't have as many amenities as some of the newer, larger ships, however we liked its smaller size. (Our trip was to celebrate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and my dad has some trouble walking far distances, so we liked that it didn't take you 20+ minutes to walk the length of the ship.) Also, the smaller capacity means fewer people getting off in your ports. My only other recent cruise experience was on the Disney Dream and the Emerald Pricess doesn’t really compare to the Dream, but I would sail on the Emerald Princess again. (I don't know anything about the Eurodam specifically, but we did see some HAL ships and I thought "that ship looks nice, too.")

I've done a few cruises with RC but only one cruise with Princess and that was an Alaskan cruise out of Seattle back in 2011. Keeping in mind since that was so long ago, my impression of it then was that it truly did keep to the cruise motto of, "newly wed, overfed, nearly dead" with a HEAVY influence of the nearly dead. The ship was like a Rascal convention (those motorized wheelchairs), my ankles got pretty bruised up from being run into. On the plus or negative depending on opinion, the ship gets eerie quiet after 8pm because half the people on it were in bed already. My husband won $1500 playing Bingo, an activity I insisted we do when we were day drunk (obviously we didn't have a child back then). I would cruise Princess again even though I think it's a nursing home at sea because fun is what you make of it. Pick whichever you can get the best room for (balcony is a must for Alaska) and has the best activities. On the positive with the older clients of Princess, you have way less drunk idiots running around puking. You might just have a few childless idiots who are day drunk at Bingo who scream, "I did it, I won! Now my Dad will finally be proud of me!". Just ignore them :)

Both HAL and Princess have done Alaska the longest, and have, generally, the best port times/itineraries. I've done HAL in Alaska, and Princess on other itineraries, but I'd go on either one.

I've been on both the Eurodam & and the Emerald. The Emerald seemed bigger, and lighter in décor than the Eurodam. I enjoyed both ships. If it matters - the Eurodam is has a smaller passenger load (2100), and the Emerald is larger (3100).

If you're traveling with younger people, I would suggest Princess over HAL. Generally, HAL is a bit more sedate in their entertainment offerings, and activities.

We were on an Alaska cruise on the Eurodam in Sept, 2019 and loved, loved, loved it. I don't know if it would be for everybody, though and I specifically don't know if a teenager would enjoy it as much as we did. But we would go back in a heartbeat.

What we loved about it was the smaller size, the kindness of the crew, the almost universal niceness of the other passengers, and the vibe it gave off of being kind of a throwback to an old-fashioned ocean liner rather than a city on the sea. It was not a geriatric cruise by any means, but it did seem to cater to adults of all ages and there weren't that many kids that we could see.

We had no complaints at all about the food. We ate at two of their specialty restaurants, the Pinnacle Grill and the Asian inspired Tamarind. We enjoyed both but we especially liked the food and the quiet, intimate atmosphere of the Tamarind.

It wasn't Holland America's fault at all, just the weather that rolled in, that prevented all passengers on all ships to miss the excursion we were most looking forward to - Dog Sledding on Mendelhall Glacier. Helicopters were grounded and there wasn't anything anyone could do about that. Going through Glacier Bay the next day brought our spirits right back up, though. It was beautiful. Juneau was just "meh", but we found the history of Sitka really interesting.

We didn't expect much of Ketchikan, so on that day we had reserved in advance a 4 person Lido cabana on the (covered, warm) pool deck for ourselves and our friends who were traveling with us. We did scurry off the ship to make a quick tour of the touristy shops in Ketchikan, as much to stretch our legs as anything, but we hurried back to the ship and enjoyed one of the best, most relaxing days of the trip just lazing around in the cabana. The ship had emptied out, the servers kept coming by to bring us anything we wanted, the pool was right there and I really enjoyed playing endless ping pong, which I used to love but hadn't done for ages.

Finally, one of the best things about the ship was that we were able to book a reasonably priced Signature Suite. It was a nice size - more like a hotel room rather than a "cabin", and it had a good sized bathroom with 2 sinks, a bathtub and a separate shower. It was just heaven to stand on the balcony and watch the world glide by.

I guess I would sum up by saying that, when you look up at the other ships docked next to the Eurodam, it looks a little sad and old next to the glitz of some of the others. But once on board, I would choose it again every time because it was small and charming rather than big and attention-grabbing. It was perfectly clean and well maintained, but if you could compare it to clothing, the Eurodam was more classic and subdued, rather than flashy and up to the minute. As we stood on our balcony and looked over at the larger ships docked next to us, we weren't jealous at all, just really glad we'd chosen the cruise we had.

By the way, you'll be glad your departure and arrival port is Seattle. They are very well organized!

I have cruised to Alaska on both HAL and Princess from Seattle. Both cruises were fantastic and Alaska is spectacular. If I were taking a teenager with me, I would choose Princess. I was 58 years old when I took the HAL cruise and I felt YOUNG. There were many, many older people on that cruise. When I say older, I mean 70’s and 80’s.

While I have not cruised on RC, that might be a good choice with a teenager (if they have cruises that go to Glacier Bay).

I would also choose the newest ship you can because a newer ship will have much more to offer a teen.

Good luck!

Thank you for all the responses, experiences and information. I've posted on other cruise boards and what you all have commented is right in line with what they said. I had a long talk with DS again last night on what HE wants out of the cruise (and grant you this is still over 2 1/2 years away) but he did mention that since he will be "older" he wants to enjoy more of the ship in the evenings. I think Princess might be a better match in that case. He also asked why I was looking at only these 2 lines and I explained about Glacier Bay and his response was that he is sure ALL of Alaska is going to be amazing and if we went with a different line that didn't go to Glacier Bay then he won't know what he was missing anyways. And maybe he is correct on that fact as well. Thankfully I have plenty of time to get it all figured out! Thank you all once again, I really appreciate it!

If that’s how he feels I really urge you to check out Royal Caribbean. I guarantee their recreation and entertainment options will be more suitable for teens. :goodvibes

I must say that our cruise went to both Glacier Bay and College Fjord. Glacier Bay is huge and impressive, but the glaciers are pretty spread out. College Fjord is what I was expecting Glacier Bay to be like. It was much smaller than Glacier Bay but you were surrounded by glaciers. It was really cool.

I would suggest that you have your son do some research on his own about Alaska and where the various cruise ships visit. He may discover some places in particular that are of interest to him.
And remember that this visit will be touching a very small part of Alaska. There is so much more to this very exciting state.

We are adults with no kids but did Alaska many years ago with Royal Caribbean and it was amazing. We left out of Vancouver and it was a 7 day one way inside passage cruise with a 3 day land tour.

Yes, we did the southbound Inside Passage out of Seward in August. We didn't see Glacier Bay, but our Hubbard Glacier day was spectacular, including the weather. There were tons of families with teens, all of whom seemed to be having a great time and as an added bonus, I don't remember seeing a single scooter or having to wait for the elevators at all.
