Alaska Cruise

Are there any in particular that you're eyeing? Any sorts of activities you like/don't like? Children's ages? There are a lot of options. It would be easier if we could have a jumping off point.

To help get you started, this thread has lots and lots of recommendations:
http://www.disboards.com/threads/alaska-excursions-post-your-reviews-here.2723087/

I also recommend going over to the trip reports section and reading over there. That really helped me see what people did and didn't like, especially those with similar aged children.

Going on the 7 day Alaska cruise on may 29. Any suggestions for what excursions to do?
We booked direct with Harv and Marv's for a whale watching boat ride in Juneau and with Chilkoot Charters for an excursion in Skagway. It seemed so much nicer than what we saw for the larger tours that used very large boats and buses. We had very small boats and buses for a much more intimate and personal experience. And it was a lot more affordable than through Disney. For the Chilkoot tour, we did the van ride up from Skagway, the lunch and dog cart experience, then the train ride down. It was perfect for us. In Ketchikan, we just walked around town on a self-guided tour: http://www.experienceketchikan.com/support-files/ketchikan_maps_downtown.pdf

Did you travel with kids? I am looking Chilkoot for the same tour with DS 11&8 on our Wonder sailing in June. I thought it would include everything they want to do in one trip.

Did you have much museum time at Caribou Crossing or did the dog cart use it all up?

TIA

We did the Skagway Chilkoot tour--bus up, train down, dog cart ride. We have 2 daughters, 16 and 12. For us all the time at Caribou Crossing Trading Post was taken up by eating lunch, then using restrooms, then the dog cart ride, then holding puppies, petting goats, and shopping. We never made it into the museum. I'd say go into it knowing you won't have time to do everything--decide what your 'must-sees' are...and perhaps the weather might also dictate where you want to be--we had a beautiful day in Canada...not so much in Alaska (fog, rain/sleet). We thought the tour was fantastic! It hit all the highlights for us. 1 direction on the train was enough for us--enough to experience it. And doing it on the way back was more relaxing after a full day of doing stuff.

We had four children with us, ages 14 down to 4. There seemed to be enough things to do to keep everyone happy. The actual dog cart ride is not very much time. But the logistics of waiting for your turn can take a bit of time.

Still, we didn't miss out on anything we wanted to do. Although, it would have been nice to have had more time to explore the museum and/or enjoy the puppies. All of those activities are in the same immediate area. So it is easy to walk between the museum, puppies, dog cart, and gift shop quickly and spend as much or as little time as you want with each activity.

We were able to take a quick walk through the museum. We didn't spend much time there. It depends on how long you want to do all the other things.

In Skagway we the the "canoe up to a glacier" excursion. You are in a canoe, but you don't paddle the whole way, just when leaving the dock area and re "docking". this excursion is now call "Glacier Point Wilderness Safari" - But wow, it's expensive. I am SURE that it didn't cost that much when we did it several years ago.

Wear Extra Warm Socks on this excursion.

We had a blast Zip Lining in Ketchikan.

If you'd like to hear about our most recent Alaska cruise with adults only, you can find my trip report here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/to...-wonder-with-four-adults-august-2016.3560012/

We have been on 3 DCL trips to Alaska, and we have loved each and every one of our excursions.

In Skagway we have done the All Aboard Steam Train adventure with the White Pass Railroad twice - fantastic weather the first time, not so much the second (rainy and foggy) but we still had a blast.

In Juneau we've done the Alaska Whales and Glacier Photo Safari twice - I absolutely love whale watching and the rainforest trek to the glacier didn't disappoint.

In Ketchikan we've done the Mountain Point Snorkelling Adventure - a pretty unique experience to snorkel in Alaska!, the Bering Sea Crab Fishermans tour which we also loved, and the Neet's Bay Bear Watch by Floatplane which was expensive but truly amazing!

This past year you'll see we also did the Glacier Explorer on the fjord canal cruising day. It gave us a breathtaking view of the glacier up close and we'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Hope this helps! You'll love Alaska!

We are wanting to do this exact excursion, but book it separate from Disney. Did you go through Disney or go on your own?
We booked it through Chilkoot Charters. It's a great tour, especially as they have the smaller bus that seats 24 people, so we could make more stops as it doesn't take as long to get on/off the bus with fewer people. The tour driver also knows the route the big buses do, so he took us to the various sites in a different order--but we still saw all the highlights.

We did not book through DCL. DH and I absolutely LOVED our helicopter tour through ketichanhelicopers.com AMAZING and totally worth the money! Family owned business. We also did Grizzly zip lining through skagwayshoretours.com, also a great experience.
