Alaska Cruise Question

Hi all!

We are doing the Alaska cruise in June and have received conflicting advice on whether we need to complete the Canadian equivalent of the ESTA (ETA) in order to enter Canada for the port day at the end of the cruise. The Candadian wesbite implies we don't need to do one as we will be entering by sea, not air, but the travel agent says differently.

I'm sure the Canadian website wont be wrong, but I just wanted to check that no one else who has done an Alaska sailing has had a problem at the Canadian port?

I am also interested in this as we are on the WBTA cruise in September and will have ports in Canada but the end of the cruise is in New York.

When I did an Alaska cruise in August 2015 we had a stop in Victoria Canada we completed a visa form only on board for the stop in Canada. These we given out while onboard and added in - I presume the staff collect and hand them all. I don't recall any check from customs/immigration when we got off - maybe we showed passports but I can't recall it.

It has this on first page of Canada website:

If you wish to travel to Canada, then you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). However, this only applies if you are traveling by air. If your form of travel is either by land or sea, then eTA Canada authorisation will not be required. Please note that travellers who do not need the eTA, will be required to have a proper identification

It's only if you arrive by air (as we will be this September for 4 night repo, Vancouver to San Diego)
If you arrive by sea, as we did on the Transatlantic last Oct then not required, their website is clear about it.

canada didn't even require the esta for flying in until recently....
a good reason to no longer fly into canada....a route we used to take into the US because of cheap flights...
