We have AT&T. Has anyone had to pay for roaming or international call rates? Please tell me good or bad what your experience was.

My dad is concerned about his 14 year old dog and didn't want to go on too long of a vacation because of his dog. :cat: So he will want dog updates.
I'm leaving my husband home, at his request (he doesn't like to cruise):confused3 so I know he will text me and call me through out the trip.

AT&T has coverage in SE AK. You can search the voice and data coverage on their site.

We have AT&T and esp on the Kenai peninsula have to use edge (E), but we've never had to use roaming in AK (we mainly stay in south central and Fairbanks area).

The only time we've had international charges was near the border with Canada (in NY), but we were still actually in the US. We called AT&T and they reversed the charges. (Now we turn the phones off when we go near the border.)

When I went on my honeymoon cruise a few years ago (on NCL), we had regular AT&T service in port, and I was able to send some texts without any extra charges. However, from what I understand, you need to be careful on the ship that you are not using the cellular at sea signal (or whatever it is called.)

I live in Alaska with AT&T. There are no roaming or int'l fees. You just have to be in their network range. You may find voice/text easy to find, but data (especially 4G) may be a little harder to find outside bigger cities. They probably have the 2nd best network in Alaska and you should be ok. Just check their coverage map.

ATT works when you are in port on the three days. You will get hit with roaming charges in Vancouver, along the BC inside passage and Prince Rupert.

Personally I prefer to pay for one of the internet packages and just get pictures emailed.

Off subject but this happened to us when driving near El Paso Texas and it really shocked us! A big message comes up "Welcome to Mexico!". Except we weren't in Mexico!! We hurried to turn off the phones.

We had some AT&T coverage when sailing. We just watched the carrier our phone said we were using. We had full coverage in all the ports.
