I joined the Alamo Insider because I thought it would make the cost of my car rental lower. However, the new price they quoted me was the same as before I signed up. Does this make sense?

Lately with Alamo-yes. They seem to have eliminated many discounts & coupons. BUt keep trying, and make sure you are logged in as an Insider. Also, try using their Deal Retriever feature--it shouldn't matter, but with their flaky website, it might. If you are getting the Insider Discount, it will say that on the car selection page, so keep an eye out for that.
