What the heck is this?

I made an Alamo reservation a week or so ago for a midsize at a pretty good price. I keep checking to see if prices drop and I thought they had but when I looked at the summary is was a few $'s higher... then I saw this Customer Facility Charge for $2.50 a day ($12.50 total for my ressie). When I went to my confirmation summary e-mail, it isn't there. :confused3

Is this new? Does it come and go? Is it going to be added to my current ressie unbeknownst to me?

Any ideas?

It's a "new tax" all the rental companies have to collect now.

From the Orlando Business Journal

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will spend $102 million on improvements to accommodate more car rental companies and improve the process of renting a car at the airport. The airport will pay for that project mostly with a "customer facility charge" of $2.50 per day for up to five days.

It's now added to all rentals picked up at the airport.

What if you made yor reservation before this came in? Made mine in July for next April.

Your reservation will be adjusted (probably already has). I made all of my reservations months ago for (Oct, Jan, May 09) and all of them are now $12.50 higher as the charge has been added on my reservations. I checked mine online to see the new charge.

If you pull up your reservation online, it will be adjusted for the new tax. Everyone has to pay regardless of when you booked.
We are going to take DME to the resort, then rent a car from the Dolphin the next day. No facility charge if you pick up at the Dolphin. DH figures we save gas usage by renting at the Dolphin.
Correction:
I was already charged a Hotel Concession Fee Recovery of $17 at the Dolphin on my original reservation.

Yep, it's a tax not a rate, so scheduling has nothing to do with it. You havent completed a transaction when you are just reserving the car, so any taxes would be in effect as the date of your rental, and in this case that means the new one will be..

Aw crap, there it is. Grumble, grumble, grumble.... I guess that's how it works, we pay for improvements. So now I can keep comparing rates and know that I will see this charge.

Or I can look at WDW rental sites.

It has always been my experience that the base rate when renting from the Dolphin or the WDW car care centre is much higher than the base rate when renting from MCO.

yes, but if you add in the $30 for gas for driving from and to the airport, it gets close to equaling out.
Example from our Nov 2008 trip 5 day rental :
Midsize at MCO using $15 off coupon and 5007125 EA $178.40
Midsize at Dolphin using $15 off coupon and 5026639 $212.36
Tolls driving on the greenway 417 $5.00
Difference $28.96

Example for our trip in Feb. 2009
Midsize at MCO 263.86 base rate, 348.78 w/taxes & fees
Midsize at Dolphin 899.83 base rate, 1,080.56 w/taxes & fees
I must be missing something. Every year I have looked at this on-line and then called to speak to an agent and every year it would cost us a lot more to get a car on-site instead of the airport.

I prefer picking up at MCO. When you can just gather your luggage walk out to garage pick out your car and your on your way. Check in resort then do whatever you have planned.

Otherwise, you have to get on the bus (which maybe even have to wait for) get to your resort, then get to the Dolphin or Car Care Center. Even if your at Epcot resort that still takes time to walk there & take care of rental. For what little difference it is, I like the convenience of MCO.

I didnt't see this thread and just posted on another thread. Intersting that avis and dollar don't seem to be tacking it on to their reservation yet.

My dolphin already has a hotel concession fee recovery of $17 for 5 day rental.
I just tried to make a new reservation picking up at car care center and the new tax is called "landlord concession fee recovery" for pick-up at the Disney Car Care Center.

Good lord! What kind of guzzler are you renting that costs $30 in gas to drive to and from MCO - WDW?
