Another tip: opt for returning the car empty. Right now that option is less than regular stations and I can tell you, our gas is going up around here, by leaps and bounds.

I've done that the last two times and it saves the hassle of trying to fill up but was thinking of filling up this time around since we are leaving later in the afternoon.

Do you know the current rate for bringing it back on empty? We will be there starting this Sat. till the following Sunday.

I didn't mean push in a negative sense....a better word would have been 'slide'. Do all classes slide down in unison, or do larger class cars sometimes skip-over interim classes. The situation I was thinking about is if there are ever 'bigger' cars on the compact and mid-size rows than on the full-size row. I was asking if you/the company explicitly try to avoid that if at all possible, or does it sometimes happen based on bookings of the smaller classes and staffing that day, etc...

What side are you coming in on?

We fly in on US Air, so I think the "B" side.

Would that be more true the emptier you bring the car back, ideally empty, gmeh1? Since a renter has to pay for a full tank, full capacity of the tank, used or not, with that option, if you are using less than maybe 3/4's of a tank, would that still apply? I normally use a half or less.

It is currently 3.35 per gallon and subject to change at any given moment, but once you opt for it, it is locked in at that price.

That rarely happens. I did not take it as a negative. I truly doubt you will see a larger car on midsize that you will see on full size. There might be exceptions, IE: mini van on mid size and only full size on full size.
Staffing will never be an issue on assignment of cars, supply and demand is pretty much the dictator of what goes where. We know how many vehicles are going out and what is coming in, we know what class of vehicles have been reserved and the assignments are generated from that information.
As I mentioned before in one thread, I worked that "assignment" thing once a week for about 2 months and it drove me NUTS!!!!

Excellent point, Dan. I definitely should have said, "If you are going to drive a lot, opt for fuel option". If you are just going to drive from the airport to the resort and back, it would be very silly indeed. I think I was writing from the "sticker shock" of seeing gas prices around here jump by .14 in one day.

Okay forgive me if this has already been answered and I am just not understanding but if you check in online and print off all your information you still have to check in at the kiosk? Also when you say pick out your car, do you do this before or after you show the person your drivers licenses and such? And if you show your information first then how do they know who has what vehicle? I am sure I am just over thinking this but any answers would be helpful. Oh also I have a standard booked but I have heard that there is no standard isle so do I go to the full size? TIA

The cars are parked in the garage with keys in the door. You choose your car and drive to the exit. At the exit (where there is a parking gate and those tire-puncturing speed bumps), an agent will record what car you are taking out.

I think you show your drivers license at both check-in and the agent at the exit.

Answer to one part of your question: As you leave the garage in your car, you stop at the exit booth and hand over your paperwork, tag that's in the car and your driver's license and credit card.
We've done the check-in online with Alamo (without a coupon) and just walked right to the garage and showed everything at the exit booth. I don't know if you can still do that or not.

Edit to the part about the car tag, it's now just done with a scan of the VIN on the dash area of the car.

No, there is no physical coupon. This is an e coupon from Alamo itself, so you'll have no problem with having to present anything, it's just the code that has to be on your reservation. We've done this many times.

GreenMtnman, was spot on, but, I need to add that you will need to show the rental agreement at the exit booth, along with your license and perhaps your credit card (not sure on that one, I don't work the exit booth).

I have an Alamo compact booked and am arriving on a Friday around 12:00 noon. What are the chances I can get a Toyota, Honday or a Nissan? The Websites says, a Nissan Versa for a compact. Do you recommend using the kiosk, or just going straight to the garage? I reserved a fullsize once, and got a huge Cadillac that I was afraid to drive. Since then I always stick to smaller cars.
