We usually use Dollar, but Alamo are coming out with better rates this time.

A few questions . . . . .

1. Does anyone know what car the "4x4 7 Seater FullSize" is usually?
2. Are Alamo "on airport" and as convenient as Dollar?
3. Is there anything similar to Dollar Express to skip the lines?
4. Do you "pick your own" car from those availablein the lot?

Thanks! :wizard:

I can answer two of those...
2. Yes
4. Yes

I don't know if this is relevant but it's worth mentioning. One 'problem' we had with Alamo was, that for the deposit, they required a credit card to be in the driver's name. I was the driver but I didn't have a credit card and they wouldn't accept my wife's CC details. So we had to leave a deposit in cash which was a pain because it meant we were $300 down on our spends before we left the airport and of course we got a large amount of $s back just before we were returning home.

We are using Alamo for the first time this summer and have booked the 4x4 full size SUV as well.

I believe the 'typical' car is the Dodge Durango. I have heard of people that have chosen a Toyota Highlander and Toyota 4runner as well.

I found something called Alamo Direct Road -

I dont know if this:
a) allows you to skip the Qs
b) have a priority Q like Dollar Express
c) speed up registration but you still have to wait in the Q

3. Dont know - but while I stood in the Dollar queue for 1.25 hrs :mad: i noticed that there was never ANY queue at the Alamo desk !!!:thumbsup2

Frances we've used Alamo a few times.
1. I think it is said to be a Durango, however, when we were there in Jan there were very few Durango's in the garage. We had a Chevvy Trailblazer amd there were a lot of Jeep Commander's in the garage;
2. Yes and yes;
3. Yes. Alamo have Direct Road, which is a similar thing;
4. Historically you have been able to, however, in Jan they allotted a car to us - so we just picked a different one (and got someone to get it for us) and then when questioned when leaving the garage, said we'd been "given" it. I think that they are trying more to tell you what to have like the others.

One thing I do not like about Alamo is that they have always tried to get me to upgrade to something better than I have. Regardless of what it is. Once they tried it and we declined, as we always do, and then when we went into the garage the car they'd tried to get us to have was just sat there - so we took it!

We've also used Hertz, admittedly at MIA, and whilst they are off site we didn't find the short trip too onerous. We're planning on using them in Nov for a luxury as they are easily cheaper than everyone else for the class.

1.25 hrs... that's awful! Just what you need after a 9hr flight! When we were there a couple of weeks ago, it was the same with Alamo - no queues, just walked straight up to the desk.

Following on from some other comments - Alamo did try to get us to upgrade the car but I guess this is company policy and to be fair they weren't pushy about it at all... we only needed to say no thanks once. Although the main desk did allocate a particular model of car to us, when we got to the pick up point we were given free choice over which car we took from what was available.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be a little annoyed if we end up with a TrailBlazer, but hopefully there will be a Durango or Commander available.

I'll sign up for the Direct-Road scheme.

Thanks again! :wizard:
