Alamo additional driver question

I'm meeting another family member in Orlando, and we want to share a car (as we have done before). But this time, he is arriving the day before I am. We're both Alamo Insider members, which allows for a free additional driver. Plus he can add my info online to the reservation. So my question is - can we both be drivers if only he is present at the time of rental? And if not, can I be verified as an additional driver when he picks me up the following day? Thanks!

You may want to email Alamo and ask. I always get a pretty quick (within a day) response to questions after emailing them.

I think the free additional driver has to be spouse or family in same house, or part of a corporate program that allows for it. Alamo is very stingy on the extra driver! If he has some coupon or code with free extra driver -- adding you on the online form usually does not work for free, it needs ot be done at the desk or checkout booth (at least that's been my experince in Orlando).

Also, they need all drivers to key in or show driver's licesne (and they ask at checkout booth to see licenses of the drivers registered) -- so I do not believe you can be added without being in person.

Yes, the free driver has to have the same address on their drivers license as you do. If you pay for the additional driver, it does not matter if the addresses are different.

As far as you being there, I would call. In the least, they will have to see a copy of your license to make sure they are valid.

Hmm... we've shared a car several times before, and we don't even live in the same state. Maybe I used the AARP code (which also gives an additional driver) instead of the Insider code, but my question was if I have to be present.
Think I'll contact Alamo.

You will have to go back to the rental counter at the airport if that is where he is picking you up, or any other Alamo rental location, where you will have to show your DL and sign the rental agreement.
I have read somewhere that the fee is waived for persons only residing at the same address also, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
A call to Alamo should clarify that.

Please let us know what they say. My additional driver doesn't have the same address on his license as me (same last name) and on their website is where I read that. Quite the bummer. I'm hoping they tell you that you can still use the free driver option even if the addy's don't match. It would sure save some $$.

Thanks for the suggestion to email Alamo - I did just that and got a same day response! I explained that we are both Insider members but do not share an address, and they responded that that is acceptable. As you can see, we will have to swing by Alamo and add the driver that isn't present at pickup, but that's no problem.

Dear Susan,

Thank you for your email.

Okay, since both of you guys are Insider members the rental station shouldn't charge you (the primary renter) an additional driver fee. Now, please keep in mind that both the renter and the additional driver must be present at the location, so add your brother to the contract when he arrives the following day. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you,
Joy
