alamo 4x4

Hi,

Just wondering what make of car you get and would you recommend alamo (purely from the being able to choose your own!) Thanks

I think they have a few different makes, the last one being a jeep.

We have used Alamo a many times and have always found them good. I like the check in on line good, so that all my driving licence details etc are already done, it also means that you go in a seperate express line. I do like the fact that you can pick your car.

However we are using dollar this time, due to the increase in hard sell on upgrades and extra insurance.

Sorry cant help with OP question(I Wont use Alamo after bad experiences, Didn't like their hard sell tactics and they had no car for us after having it booked 8 months) Others have no problems with them.

Carole, Have you registered online with Dollar express? Saved us an hour at Easter. Costs nothing and you go right to the front like Alamo.

I know what you are saying about Alamo, they never used to be that bad, one no seemed to be enough, but now So I voted with feet and moved to dollar

We have had no problems with alamo but I wouldn't reccommend getting a Jeep 4 x 4 we have had one in the past and they are thirsty on petrol and the brakes are very, very soft. I'd reccomend going for a 7 seater if you want more space, it's less than the 4 x 4 to hire and IMHO a far better option.

tony64, there are 3 of us and wanted to be high up. Last time got an ordinary 4 door car and hated being low down. Have a CRV at home, not a massive 4x4 but nice to be high up.

Fancy a red jeep, saw one last time and it was lovely.

Staying at Cypress Pointe, so driving to all parks think US/IOA would be the most distance we would drive apart from airport. Thought they did about
20 mpg bit concerned now about the brakes, not heard that anyone has had a problem!

I doubt you will be able to tie up your booking with your express card unless you have booked direct online with Dollar.
We use Airnet.co.uk, they said they could not add my express number to my booking(even though Dollar told me they could), Dollar said they could not add my airnet booking to my express account.
So in the end they were not tied together. I just turned up went to express line, gave them me Airnet voucher, Express card and Driving licence. No problems at all, no hard sell, and free upgrade to Luxury instead of full size.

Sorry, just cannot agree.
I have hired over ten Grand Cherokees and a couple of Commanders and never found the brakes soft. They feel like normal autobox brakes.
As for the fuel consumption, well there not that bad, the Laredo 3.7ltr 4X2 which is the normal one they rent out is 22 MPG, that's a bit better than my Range Rover Sport which does 15 MPG, though the Grand Chreokee is a lot slower.

I was going to suggest the Pacifica as a good compromise too, Johnny.

Historically we've rented with Dollar, but we've switched to Alamo for the last two trips and we've been happy with the "choose your vehicle" element. Last January we had a Cadillac SRX. We'd booked a Luxury category and it was sitting in the bay when we got to the garage, so we took it. It's not a 4x4 as such, but it fits your "high up" requirement and it was a lovely vehicle.

For August, we've decided to go with Hertz. We've never considered them before because they're offsite at MCO, but thanks to positive reviews from Obi and others, and an unbelievable rate (£345 for 2 weeks for either a Lincoln Navigator or a Cadillac Escalade) it really is a no-brainer.

We recently got back and used Alamo and had no problems with them whatsoever. We had a full size car booked but knew that we probably wanted to upgrade to a SUV when we got there and had a figure in our head of how much we were prepared to pay. We got our upgrade. We had no hard sell and they didn't force us to take out extra insurance. I liked being able to choose our own car. I found the brakes fine, didn't notice how much petrol it drank probably because petrol is so cheap and I loved driving it.

We have just returned , we used Alamo for a Standard SUV at MCO. There were 3 choices, a Jeep Laredo which we took, a Korean looking one I've never heard of and I think a Toyota Rav4. The Jeep was by far the best for luggage space which was an issue for us with a pushchair and mother in law but not as good as the foreign cars for interior etc. Engine was very sluggish and a bit thirsty too. I had a Toyota 4Runner last year and that was by far my favourite.

Just a quick note, fill in your details before you go and use their quick check out booths. We walked past a queue of around 50 people, scanned the confirmation email under a barcode scanner and walked out!

No upgrade issues, no pressure to buy a tank of petrol, nothing.
