Hey there,

I was wondering if any of you have information about the upcoming production of Aladdin - The Musical which will be presented in Seattle?

Forgive me because I do not have the link it front of me.

I believe what is showing is a new, off-Broadway style show that is based upon Alan Menken's original concepts for the movie. It features songs from the film and additional ones as well. It is not exactly a re-telling of the movie the same way that "Beauty and the Beast" and "Lion King" are.

It will be a licensed show, meant to be played in smaller regional theaters, not a big Broadway spectacular. And it is not the version that is still playing at Disney California Adventure

rr is correct, its bypassing the whole broadway, etc, and is going straight to MTI

We are 5th Avenue Season Ticket Holders. This show will actually be going directly to Broadway after its opening here.

The 5th Avenue is a regional theater that has sent several shows to Broadway. Most notably Hairspray and Catch Me If You Can. The first won several Tonys and the second is up for 2 this year.

We are excited to see the show on July 17th and I would be happy to post a review when afterward.

whats your source on it moving to broadway after? (pm of you wish) everyone I've talked to etc is telling me its more or less a "test run" that will be licensed out for regional/local theaters, similar to whats planned for Newsies/Junglebook

I could be wrong. I thought we had gotten a notice when they preempted our showing of Oklahoma and replaced it with Aladdin. I can't find that now of course but I do have my tickets for 7/17.

I know that the 5th has been used as a test market to see how a show might do on Broadway which is how Hairspray and Catch Me If You Can ended up on Broadway.

No idea about whether or not its going to Broadway, but I wonder if this version is the one that will appear on the Disney Fantasy next year.

It would probably have to do really well regionally since Walt Disney Theatrical has had a rough few years launching new shows. Tarzan was a total flop and The Little Mermaid only lasted a little over a year.

The California Adventure version is the one that is going to the cruiseline, which is great because that show is so fantastic. It really beats the stuffing out of Toy Story: The Musical.

Also, I just found this article posted on Jim Hill Media that talks about how the original voice of Jafar from the animated feature is going to play Jafar in the pilot production of the new musical.

That article is here

It confirms that it is primarily designed for regional theater and licensing, but leaves the door open for it to go to Broadway, probably if it is very well received.

Still holding out hope for Hunchback to finally get put on in the US.

Oh ok, California Adventure version makes more sense anyway. According to the ever-reliable wikipedia, a Hunchback version is in the works but so are quite a few other obscure ones...

hunchback is actually written/designed and translated its just been "sitting on the shelf"
