AKV - What's so great about it now?

I haven't been to AK in about 5-6 years. Have things changed?

Just trying to figure out if it makes sense to do add-on here or BCV or BWV.

I have a 6 year old son and VWL takes care of our MK addiction. He has never been to AK (unless you count when he was a 1 year old).

I went to AK in March, it was 6 years after my last trip. I was very pleasantly suprised. First of all, EE was awesome. All the CM were super friendly (it was our honeymoon). The park was just more "polished" than during my first trip. As ar as AKL, we didn't stay there but we went there for dinner at Boma and I absolutely fell in love. I can't wait until AKV is built. I am particularly fond of the theme, and I love the artwork and details everywhere. When we went for dinner, we arrived about 30 minutes early to scope out the lobby. There was an enormous fabric sculpture in the center of the lobby. As was admiring it, a gentleman came over and introduced himself- he was from the villiage in Africa where the piece was made and told me all about it. Turns out it was a mask that was worn for a ritual ceremony. the person (13yrs old) e mask has to train for about a year to wear it, (over 6feet high and 100+ pounds).
Anyway, this interaction was one of the highlights of my trip! ANd i wasn't even a guest at this resort.

I think Animal Kingdom Lodge appeals to a certain type of person...we find the theming is magnificent and we always sense the lobby is deserving of a hushed awe...similar to the way many feel when they step into the cool, cavernous lobby at Wilderness Lodge. It is different than the lobbies of other resorts (which have their virtues but look more like traditional hotels).

Because we are the kind of people that have no problem suspending our disbelief (otherwise what on earth would be doing at Disney?) we found ourselves easily swept up in the romance of sitting on a verandah at night and watching zebra and other animals moving silently through the (ok, artificial) moonlight. It has been a dream of ours to stay at one of the great safari lodges near Nairobi, and although AKL is a far cry from that, we find it a magical substitute to try and follow the animals' movements at night, and delightful to wake up in the morning to a giraffe opting out of its hay bag to instead vandalize some tree. We appreciate the efforts that have gone into making this completely planned environment look natural...and even accidental.

One morning we came down to breakfast at Boma, which seems to ALWAYS smell like something impossibly tantalizing is grilling, and a group of servers from Africa in color splashed native dress suddenly burst into song. If it was rehearsed, it didn't look it. And their faces appeared content, and happy, not harried like waitresses at Denny's. By the campfire one evening a young native of Kenya told a wonderfully funny (on both kids and adult level) fable about a chicken using enthusiastic hand gestures and facial expressions. My kids were transfixed. We learned to listen for the subdued drum beats that play around the resort are so easy to miss. Tons of extras, like the artifacts in and around the lobby, the big rocking chairs on the "secret"' verandahs, the pool that hides the truth of its chlorination...and more we have yet to discover.

It's why we just bought add on points for AKV, because the savannah view room prices at AKL are so high, our AP discounts are pretty worthless on rooms other than All-Stars most of the year, and we want to be able to stay at AKL at least one or two nights every other visit. Everyone seems to have their favorites-and for all kinds of very valid reasons. I'd say buy or add on points at the place that makes your heart race most!

For us we bought at AKV purely to do every two to three years and stay in a savannah view room. We have wanted to stay at AKL but never have and since owning DVC never planned to because the point trade out was not so hot.

My boys favorite thing ay AK is the safari ride. When I spoke to my DH about AKV and mentioned the savannah view the kids were very excited about it. We often do one two two non park days when we go to WDW. Staying at AKV with a savannah view we will have another thing to enjoy on nonpark days.

Our son just turned 3, DAK is pretty much his second favorite park. He prefers Magic Kingdom of course. But I think you are making a mistake if your not taking your child to animal kingdom. I don't know, maybe our son just likes animals a lot. We have a membership at our local zoo, but he likes animal kingdom a lot, and at home sometimes requests the animal kingdom sing along songs dvd or to watch home movies from there. He really likes the safari, but also likes conservation station and the walking trails. Last trip (he was 35 months) he liked dinorama and the dig site and the spinner ride a lot as well. It is for sure his second favorite park.

At epcot, he really likes the nemo ride. After that he likes the mexico boat, innoventions, walking around, and figment a little. So it is third favorite. He doesn't really like much at mgm except the characters. We keep thinking he'd like playhouse disney show but he gets too excited and wants to leave. He doesn't really like dark shows. Anyway, I just wanted to say that you shouldn't skip animal kingdom, our child loves it.

AK and Epcot are our favorite parks. We will often do several days a trip at AK, and often will start our day there and then move on to another park.

I think those who went to AK once in the very begining of the park, and didn't go back will be pleasantly surprised. FIrst of all, it's about twice the size is was in the begining, and includes several thrill rides, as well as little special animal habitats spread throught the roots of the Tree of Life. We love the intimacy of the park as well as the fantastic details in the African and Asian sections.

One of the disappointing things to me about AK is it's always seemed like a "lesser than" park. Its way away from the others near the AS resorts, there were few rides, and it closes very early even after daylight saving starts. But there are a lot more things to do than the first time I went and the first time I went during EMH and we stayed until midnight I think, or way later than I had ever seen the park open, it was neat being there after dark. We also went Thanksgiving of '05 and my DD2 loved the Christmas themed Jammin Jungle parade where one of the floats was shooting out snow (bubble foam) and it just seems like you can almost touch the parade there instead of being forced way back on the side walk like MK. Then throw in Expedition Everest, it's definitely growing in to an equal park in my mind now.

Just to echo what some of the others have been saying.

My wife and I held out waiting for DAKV to come on the market. We had talked about buying VWL (aftermarket) or SSR. But neither of those places appealed to us the way DAKV did.

We've never stayed at the lodge, but we have always wanted to. We love the Savanna, we've spent hours watching the animals and talking the CM. We always try to go to Boma (there is a chef there that we feel like we know, my wife has an egg allergy), and Jiko when we want a nice sit down.

With the chance to buy into DAKV, with the concierge level, and savanna views, and the wonderful pool. We just can't see a "downside" to it. (The founders tapestry, was just BONUS.)

We also love AK, I think it's my second favorite park (I still like Epcot a bit more.)

Johno

ps. our paper work FINALLY got to us

It seems to me that AK is still growing, and has a lot of room to do so, so the future looks very promising.
And you have the extra years on the contract.
But I think you should take a trip down to get the feel of each of the places you are considering. It would be a very expensive disappointment if you didn't enjoy the home resort advantage in a resort that you love.

I've got to quit reading the AKL threads. I keep telling myself, I don't need more points, I don't need more points. I've got too many points and TS weeks now, but I really, really want AKL. It is gorgeous, I love the restaurants, I love watching the animals. I really, really want it!!

That's what the resale market is for....sell some of the points you HAVE and buy some of the points you WANT.

I'm a stinker, ain't I. :)

I really enjoy the Animal Kingdom park, but really dislike the way the area seems so far from everything else. I think those who really like the theming are thrilled to get AKV, not so for us.

I really didn't like Saratoga Springs that much in the beginning, holding out hope for CRV. But compared to AKV, I am liking Saratoga much better and hope that by selling both I will get a screamin deal on Saratoga Springs.

Luckily, DVC has something for everyone, and for those who are as thrilled with AKV as I would be with CRV..ENJOY!:thumbsup2

Yes you are a stinker because I WANT the points I HAVE and I also want AKL.
What do I do now? Everytime Jan. comes around and all my MF are due, I feel like I need to take out a second mortgage.

Pay monthly....the sticker shocks not as bad. :)

And have the kids (if you have any and they're old enough) get part time jobs at the local supermarket bagging groceries to help pay the MF's (hey....their vacations too...and someday they'll inherit!!) :)

:stir:

(Still being a stinker....)

Ten Thousand Volts---thank you, actually I moonlight as a freelance writer, but I rarely get to write about things I really love, like Disney and vacations! I have to write plodding, dull articles for corporate publications zzzzz when I'm not as my "day job" as a learning architect. BUT!!! the last check paid for a DCL cruise in May and our AKV add-on!!! so I can only winge so much about it. My dearest wish is to someday get paid to travel around and write about the places I visit. There's such an incredibly wonderful world out there...somebody's got to tell everyone else what they find! :) I tell myself I'm sharpening my virtual travel talons by writing trip reports and other stuff on DIS and other boards. I am flattered by your comment. :cloud9:

We were staying at AKL when we bought our first contract at SSR, Being an annimal lover (possibly to a fault) , waking up to see all these beautiful annimals walking by my window is something I just can't pass up. Back then DVC applied the cost of my vacation to the cost of my points contract, lot more incentives when SSR first went public. Guess they were not sure of how sales would go. They did not have the DVC member response like they are getting with AKV.

Ten Thousand Volts---thank you
You are welcome- and thank YOU- for getting me excited about AKV.
I always thought the theming and details at AKL were really cool- but was hesitant to stay there due to its location. But you make make it sound like the experience of the resort itself is worth the trip to WDW.

I haven't seen any literature on the new AKV, and I haven't been to the boards in a while, but...

Are we sure that all the AKV rooms will even look out over the area where the animals roam? Also, has anyone seen layout information on the rooms? Which DVC resort are they most similar too?
