AKV - Broken toothbrush, luggage mishap at Disney resort led to tourist's arrest

You're likely correct- there's a bigger picture. Also, the wise also realize that news stories are typically only tidbits of the real story, so judge not.
Trust me, I'd be irritated that my 14 bags were being held up, but then I'd be the one who compensated them for the toothbrush- a little compassion goes a long way. Did the manager really win here, or could it have been avoided? Giving them thousands of dollars in legal fees now does not help. I'm not saying their choices were right, but it was so little to ease the tensions!

What could possibly be gained by holding luggage ransom no matter what the real story was? Really?? If I had a gripe about anything, I wouldn't even think to hold someone else's luggage hostage until it was resolved. In fact, I would call the manager, gripe that someone else's luggage was delivered to my room, and oh, BTW, you also caused XYZ damage. I would want the luggage removed immediately, and at some consideration and restitution for the damage. But to hold the luggage hostage???? Wow, I guess they do things differently down under. :upsidedow

I don't think the manager had a choice from what I understand. They tried several times to retrieve the luggage. Now, you may be suggesting that the manager bow down to whatever request they were making in order to get the luggage returned. THAT is not how it should work and would only embolden these people and others to act this way again in the future. If they decided to be idiots and take it to this level, they deserved to be taken into custody and see what the consequences of their actions really bring. Maybe they won't do it again in the future when something else happens they don't like.

Gee, it states the wife wasn't detained so she could care for the couples children. I wonder if the she was evicted in the middle of the night like the "I could of built a meth lab" guy was a few months ago. If not, Disney better lift the lifetime ban on him.

That must have been a special Hello Kitty toothbrush ...........

they took advantage of staff's mistake- the one with dyslexia that delivered to the wrong room. I bet they compensated that family for their luggage being held. Bad PR for AKV or lodge that day.

I don't think it was bad PR. I appreciate the fact they were willing to go to that level and get the issue resolved with the police. Did they screw up in the delivery? Sure, but how did that harm them? The only harm could be that it occupied their room, so I would think reasonable people would want it out of there asap. If the toothbrush was broken at some point, that is a separate issue. Tell you what is bad PR, when you are at a hotel that delivered your bags to the wrong room or had some obnoxious guests next door to you and the hotel management does nothing to resolve the issue other than ask nicely over and over for those guests to be reasonable and return the luggage. Do you think the people waiting for their luggage were happy or sad to see the issue resolved?

Being a recipient of an obnoxious guest at 2AM at a nice hotel once with the hotel management doing nothing after repeated calls down to them, I can appreciate what they did here. BTW, I have never stayed at another one of those hotels since. I wrote a letter to corporate about our experience there and got a free night to try it again. Yea, right. Not going to happen.

As you say we don't know the bigger picture. With a couple that has to be a bit unbalanced, I'm not going to assume the mgr. could have avoided the situation. Also as a mgr. if I went to the people and they wouldn't let me take the luggage out and were holding the luggage hostage I would call the police as well. Not to escalate but I would be worried about their potential actions and the safety of nearby guests. Someone that unbalanced could be capable of a lot worse than holding luggage. In the world we live in, involving the police was prudent.

All I can say is that I am glad that I wasn't staying in that particular area at that particular time. We have stayed on that particular floor close to those particular rooms several times. Our last visit over Christmas we were over on the wing closer to Jambo. One of the really nice things about Kidani is that it is so easy to bring the luggage to the room ourselves when we have a car. We typically have a carry-on and a checked bag each. We get them to the elevator and we have them in the room right away. It's so much easier than potentially dealing with such craziness on the part of another guest if luggage is accidentally brought to the wrong room. On the other hand, in my experience, the bell services are so efficient that luggage has typically arrived minutes after checking into our room. I really feel sorry for the other party trying to get their bags at midnight, when all they probably wanted was to shower, put on fresh clothes and get a good night's rest before a busy day.
