I called reservations and was told they cannot fit 5 people in one room ?
is this true ... 2 adults and 3 children (age 12-16)

That is correct. A standard room has a max occupancy of 4 people. The exception is a child under age 3.

There are resorts that have rooms that can take 5 - POR for example

If you really want to stay at AKL, you can fit 5 in a 1BR villa

All of the deluxe rooms at AKL-Jambo House that used to sleep five were on the fifth floor. These were all converted to DVC villas, so you either have to look for a villa via standard reservations (not always available) or look into renting points from a DVC member.
