AKL upgrades? Are they easy to come by?

I am trying to decide if I should down size my ressie in hopes for a free upgrade to Sav or Pool view to save money. We have a Sav view reserved now. I am just wondering how generous is AKL in giving free upgrades? To be honest it really doesn't matter to me if we have Sav view or not but it does to my DH.

Well ... as I have read repeatedly on this board, you should reserve what you want, rather than be disappointed. Also, as someone pointed out to me an upgrade to savannah room from standard is TWO upgrades. That being said, only 10% of all the rooms at AKL are standard rooms and I wonder if they overbook a bit expecting some upgrades. Maybe someone knows more about the booking policies? We were upgraded from standard to savannah in December - at 1:30 am no less. I booked standard not understanding that it wasn't savannah (duh!) and the code had expired by the time I realized my error. Getting that upgrade was a wonderful moment for my family! Good luck!

Most of the rooms at AKL are Savanna or Poolview... if you book a standard view room and the week you are travelling is not busy - you stand a good chance of an upgrade. As you know, one can never count on these things so you also could very well be assigned a standard.

My best advice is if you really have your heart on Savanna don't take the chance... however, if you would be okay with a pool view ~ go for it.

There are many areas in the hotel to see the animals even if you do not have a savanna view room.

We were just there and HATED it! That cast members were all rude and snotty. We politely asked if there would be any upgrades available, the cm shot back, there will be an extra charge for that! We said forget it, we were just asking. She acted offended by it!

Sorry that happened to you and there is absolutely NO excuse for it. However I am afraid you were a victim of Internet backlash. So many people read on Internet forums about getting upgrades and especially getting them at AKL, that the CM's just get tired of it. No excuse believe me, but it does explain what happens.

At one time they printed up a sign and put it on the Front Desk, that said No Upgrades, please do not ask.

My adivce to any future travelers, Pay for what you really want, if some magic comes your way without asking, then enjoy it. I don't ask for upgrades unless I am willing to pay.
