Hi everyone!,

Our next trip is scheduled for Aug. 18th - 24th at the AKL Concierge but I will be crying on this trip!!!!!

We are dropping off our only child, Brian, to attend college at UCF. So this trip will be bittersweet. I know he will have so much fun at UCF but we will miss him so much! We planned a week at the AKL to help us say good-bye!

For those of you going that week, look for me at the AKL pool. You will not miss me...I will be the one with the red eyes!

Seriously, I will be wearing a lime green visor hat. Stop by and say hello. We are not going to do the parks this trip, just relax at the pool and enjoy the restaurants.

PS We hava a 2 week trip planned for the last week of October thru the first week of November to visit him and do the F & W Festival!

Thanks all for listening....

Sad Mom and Dad.....:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Hi.

I remember when my parents dropped me off at college for the first time. I was so sad and my mom told me she cried all the way home. That was a long ride - Boston to Philadelphia.

I know it's going to be hard to send your son off to college. I have a son, and although he's only 1, I cannot bear the thought of being away from him. I am sure that these feeling intensify over time...am I right?

Well, I don't know if I helped or not, but try to enjoy your relaxing trip at AKL concierge. It sounds wonderful to be able and relax and enjoy all the wonderful restaurants at WDW.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Anne

More excuses to go to WDW!!!! Just relax and have fun at AKL! My mom cried all the way home when she dropped me off at college (UF) and I was 23 and had already been living on my own for two years! Don't think you will be the only one either... I ended up not leaving my apt for three days until my roomates got there, even though I had been to Gainesville several times and knew my way around. I'm sure your son is nervous, too.

Hi there ~ I will be at AKL Concierge when you are there and I can offer you the perfect solution to your "I miss my child blues"

I will "LET" you spend a few hours with my 9 year old DD while I go shopping or to the spa :p

I am certain byt the time I return (6 or 8 hours later) you will not have had enough of her yet - so I will "LET" you continue to keep her with you while I have a nice quiet dinner at JIKO... won't this be fun!!!?? and the perfect solution to both our problems :)

Please ~ no thank you is necessary, just the look in your eyes after a day with my DD will be enough.

>>^..^<<

I can remember dropping my daughter off for the Disney College program last year.

I was crying but she walked through the gates with a smile on her face. I was glad to know she was doing what she had dreamed of but I was going to miss my daughter bigtime!!!!

The year away helped her to grow into a wonderful young adult. I am amazed what she learned to do in that year. I heard from her more when she was in FL then when she lived at home. She was always calling to share something that she had done that day.

That did give me lots of excuses to go down and visit her and the parks. I managed 7 trips in a year.

Enjoy your trip and remember you are a Mother. You earned the right to cry when your child leaves.

I as well as many others understand how that will feel to say goodbye to your child going off to college. I had to do it last summer, when my daughter went off to UCF also. Lucky for me, she is within a three hour drive, but it might as well be a million miles. I never wanted her to live away at school.

Don't worry too much about your son. My daughter had a wonderful first year at UCF! Your son will love it, and living away from home helps them to grow as a person. And, as Safetymom said -- You earned the right to cry when your child leaves.

BTW-- hope you enjoy AKL. We just got home from there a few weeks ago and loved it!

Nutz4dzny:

I feel your pain all the way here in Stratford, NJ. I dropped my son off at college and it was only and hour away and I cried for days.
He is now 23 and in January of 2002 he moved acrossed the country to California. We now lived on different coasts. I still cry everytime I think about how far away he is. When he comes home for a visit I try and convice him to come back, but he loves California.
I must say that he has grown into a fabulous young adult and I am so proud of him making his way in the world on his own.
I have to admit that I have tears in my eyes right now writing this. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier but it doesn't. It is just a part of growing older.

that you can afford college and the AKL!!!!!:) We are looking at college in two year and are booking a big trip for right before then, a graduation/ 20th anniv. trip!!! Lucky for us our son is in a scholarship program for his first two years of college. He has completed 2 of the 4 necessary requirements. Wish us luck!!!

Mine doesn't leave for 3 years and I'm crying too. Best of luck for you and your son.

I also can remember when my parents dropped me off for college. My Dad had to practically drag my Mom out to the car! I really couldn't understand it then but now that I am a Mom I have a hard time letting my 9 year old ride the roller coasters (college may be completely out of the question(LOL)).

To make you feel better, I am now a Mom of 3 and we live two houses away from my parents so she can see her grandchildren (and me of course) every day. I know I will feel the same as you when my kids leave home but for now a trip to anywhere with only DH sounds heavenly!

We just took a trip to AKL and it was for my older son's graduation from high school. I know how you feel about leaving your son at college. My DS goes at the end of the month and I am dreading it. He will only be 2 hours away but I keep asking him if he will be coming home at least a few weekends during the semester. He humors me by saying maybe. I'll be crying all the way home! I do have a younger son at home so he will be getting alot of attention. You can add some more trips to Disney as an excuse to visit your son.

((Hugs))
I can totally relate. My oldest son is only going into 6th grade and I'm already trying to mentally prepare myself for college. LOL...and I still have all the teen years to look forward to!

Have a great time...
PS..that's a great picture at the bottom of your post!

We'll be at AKL (not concierge unless we get the upgrade of the decade - LOL!) the same week you are too! When you're done watching the aforementioned child you can take over for my two! They're 5 and 1 so they'll give you some exercise chasing around the pool. Look for us too! My 19 mo old is delayed walking so if you see a kid scooting around the edge of the pool with an older brother jumping around him that will be us! (I have a blue bathing suit). Save us some pool chairs! :teeth: Just kidding on that one. I'd love to finally meet someone from these boards. I didn't see any lime green ribbons last trip (3 yrs ago).

I know it must be hard to send your son off to college. My mom certainly had a hard time seeing me go but she adjusted well it seemed to me. I LOVED having her visit - hopefully you'll have many great visits too.

Hope to see you there and that your trip is too much fun to have time to cry.:D

This is not the end, but the beginning of another beautiful chapter in your life - and later on maybe a few grandchildren to spoil. If your lucky, you can spoil them and hand them back. lol

Take care and I hope you and your family have a great time. :)

You all made me feel so much better reading your replies.

>>^..^<< I laughed so hard I nearly fell on the floor! My son was laughing also. Your daughter looks so sweet!!!!! Maybe 1 hour would be OK! Look for me at the pool.

lynr - Hello neighbor! Wow, California......I can understand how you feel. Thanks for sharing and snifflling with me. :)

Selket - Please look for me. I always get a chair by the Hot Tub near the AKL Fitness Center. I will have my lime Green Visor either on or hanging on my chair! I would love to say hello.

Divamomto3 - The time does go by fast. Thanks for mentioning about the picture. I am forever taking pictures and I think my family is trying to hide my cameras!

Snowysmom - What a nice graduation present. You are right! It will give me an excuse to visit more often!

Lisa3 - What a coincidence, that is so nice that you live close to your parents! We also live close! 2 streets away and my sister lives next door! It does help having family near. Enjoy them while they are young! And take LOTS of pictures.

Mary Anne - Thanks for the good wishes!

Pryncess'mom - I am still in shock at the price of college but I know it will be worth it. That is so great that your son is on scholarship! You must be a proud Mom. I do send good wishes your way as he completes his next 2 years!

susy - I do think he is a little nervous but he is not showing it yet. I am doing that for the both of us!

scanne- I thought maybe Brian would want to go to Philadelphia for college also, but one look at the UCF campus and he said...I am going here! Of course, me being such a Disney Fan... I couldn't object. I will just have to visit more often!

For everyone else who replied...THANKS a heap. My DH is reading this Post over my shoulder and he can't believe how wonderful you guys are at the DIS Boards. Thanks again.

PS I will Post a trip report when I get home. Be prepared with tissues!!!!!!!

;) ;) ;) :D :p :p ;)

I'm so glad you posted this!

I'm dropping my son off for the WDW College Program in 3 weeks.

Although I am thrilled for him, I am going to miss him terribly!

Don't think I'll manage 7 trips to WDW during his stay, but I'm shooting for 2! :)

tikibirds - Welcome to the Boards! That is so great that he is participating in the WDW College Program. We used to live near Pittsburgh...New Castle! I know your son will have a great time there. I met a lot of kids who did the Program and they said they made Life-Long friends and had such fun. Please Post later and tell us how he is doing!

(((HUGS))) To you and your family. But what better way to start yours and your DH "new" life together! Your finally going to remember what it was like before kids! Our DD is only 2 and we can't rememeber what it was like w/ out her, but we do think about what we will do once we are "alone" again. Okay let's not rush it. She grows an inch and I go through 2 boxes of tissue. I can't imagine College. Anyway I wanted to send you a hug and let you know your not alone. I am currently loosing my DH during the week. He has to work out of town every week and is only home for about 16 hours on the weekends! We miss him so. So he told us to plan a nice 2 week vacation for just the 3 of us. No one else. (I have a problem w/ inviting other family members along on our vacations!)
Keep your chin up.

I can totally relate to how you feel.
I remember the day my oldest son left for college and I cried all the way home.
When my younger son left, and they were both away, I couldn't stop crying, I missed them so much!
Because he's your only child, you'll have all these feelings rolled into one!
I'm glad to report that my older son is now 22 and graduated in May from University of Massachusetts, and has become a fine young adult. Number 2 son will enter his 3rd year in Sept.
BTW, I was sad for a long time, but finally realized I was going to be OK. My husband and I enjoyed each others company again along with the nice quiet atmosphere (phone not ringing constantly, no houseful of friends, etc.) Not that I dislike all that but it's nice to remember how things were before we had children. It can even be downright romantic!
Good luck and have a great trip at AKL Concierge. You WILL be okay eventually!
And I'm looking forward to your trip report...keeping kleenex by the computer;)

nutz4dzny, hello neighbor, actually I work in Mays Landing at Conectiv.
We are a very close family also, 4+ years ago we dropped our only child off with Uncle Sam. We see him for a few weeks every 8 - 12 months.

Our "little boy" will be home in from Sicily in Nov., we're spending 9 nights at WDW. Hey, at least you can see your son quite a bit during the year. And with him at UCF you've got a built in excuse for more trips to WDW, not that any of us here need much of an excuse to plan a trip there, hehe. We actually took 3 trips in 8 months right before our son left for boot camp.

Your upcoming trip will be one of your most memorable, enjoy yourselves.
