Do the options for check - in change as we get closer to the date?

When I looked today, and I'm 7 months out... the only options were High floor, low floor, near lobby and so forth. Nothing about being by any trail??

Some people call ahead or send a fax/email with a trail request if possible. This doesn’t guarantee a trail or view but usually they will try to accommodate. Last year I sent a fax a week or so before. Got the view I wanted!

If you request close to Lobby you will run the chance of getting a road view...
However all the rooms above the actual check in desk are standard view but there are few.
for the pool/Mara (Mara is by the pool on the Zebra train side) request Zebra train if not request Kudu trail.
Both sides have obstructed views but for the simple fact that the pool is on the Zebra train side there are more on the Kudu train side.
With either option you will have a walk and sometimes seeming far...
There are a few rooms on the Zebra trail side that are obstructed and will also have a view of both the Epcot and MK fireworks in the distance..
With caution you are paying for a standard view and these rooms do not have good views if you get a good view you will likely be walking and there are a good number of these rooms...there are also some very blocked pool view rooms.
However if you pay for a pool view that is what you will get period so take your chances and get a standard or pony up for the Savannah unless you want a view of the pool.
if you get a not so nice view no worries the best animal viewing either way is done on the main savannah area off the lobby around 5 and after as they feed the animals for all the Dinner guests to see.

I actually confirmed my online check-in info with the AKL front desk at the beginning of our stay, and they confirmed that we had been assigned the "near paddock" room that we had requested.

The fact that there have been occassional IT glitches with online check-in doesn't mean that the system doesn't work. Disney gets IT glitches in all online departments: resort booking, dining booking, FastPasses, etc., but no one is going to stop using those systems, because overall, they work.

The on line choices have become very generic and sometimes not even relevant to the category of room/villa you've booked. For example a villa at Jambo will be on the 5th floor (club on the 6th) yet 'lower floor' was a choice I had last December for a 1 br. villa. A few years ago Kudu trail was an option, earlier than that Arusha view and/or Zebra trail were options. Call and have your specific request noted. Do not select a preference w/ online check in as rumor is that cancels pre-existing requests.

Giraffe trail w/ it's 'secret door' half way to the bus stop is an option, but you risk getting front of the building views and there are no savanna views on Giraffe trail - only pool & out the front.

But I know that the GF does not have anything that could be considered a paddock and that was an option for my online check in there once upon a time. There were several reports from other posters regarding other resorts having the odd 'paddock' choice as well.

It was a glitch for paddock to show up for GF, but it's a normal selection at AKL, or at least it used to be before they streamlined online check-in a bit last year. Those glitches you're referring to occurred commonly during their streamlining process. People at GF would get camping options that were only applicable to Ft. Wilderness, for example.

I felt like it was a pretty long walk, but honestly when we are at Disney we just expect to walk a bunch. We never book Preferred.

We were in room 3218. We booked standard view but we had a view of the animals. It was a perfect room! Very close to the lobby. Giraffes and zebras outside our balcony every night. It was Jambo House, Kudu Trail, Sunset Savannah. This is the view from our balcony.

Today I was on Touringplans.com and if their pictures are correct for Standard 2 queen room...
I like 3218-3226, 3320-3324, mostly on the Kudu Trail.
Does it matter what floor 2, 3 or 4? It seems that floor 3 & 4 have a little better view over the picket fence.

That is the exact area I put on the fax for Touring Plans to send in. I see that it was probably a good choice!

Hello!

I booked a AKL Standard view room at Jambo house mainly because pool view rooms weren't available. I was curious if there is a specific Trail or area that we should try and request to get an ok view? The only view I am desperate to avoid is an ugly roof view.

What are the odds of getting an OK view with the standard rooms and if anyone did have a good view and wants to post and share I'd appreciate it!

We stayed at AKL during star wars marathon weekend, AK 20th anniversary, and earth day this month. So needless to say, it was crowded. However, we had no problem getting upgraded from our standard view room to a full savannah view at no extra cost and it was ready when we checked in (10AM). Plus they never charged us for parking! I believe AKL is probably the last deluxe resort to fill up because of its location compared to other resorts on property, and generally has a good reputation of giving upgrades.
