If you want information on these resorts, SSR in particular, go over to the
DVC Planning Board. Since those are both DVC resorts (but of course they have rooms for cash reservations as well) you see a lot more information on them over there.
I love SSR. Its a central location which is nice. I haven't stayed at AKL but again, there will be people on the DVC boards that have stayed at both. Being near DTD and its dining and shopping is also nice. And SSR has the main pool with the zero entry and then another pool in the Carousel section that has spray jets and cannons as well as its own pool bar. There are also a couple of other quiet pools at SSR but they don't have the spray area/cannons the Carousel quiet pool does. SSR is also finished so there is no constrution noise or issues to deal with.
If you go with a studio at either one of these and save money over a rooom at the Poly, you will also have a microwave in your room, a larger frig and you will be able to use the laundry rooms for free near the pool(s). DVC laundry rooms are complimentary, a nice little perk.
SSR is more of a condo type feel with lots of buildings and is spread out. There is no room service at this resort so if that's important you might want to think twice. We love that set up, others don't and miss the feel of a hotel with a lobby, room service and more hustle and bustle. SSR is very tranquil and relaxing. There are always lots of kids but again, its spread out so there's room for everyone to spread out in.
Good luck with your choice! If you haven't already, go to:
