Okay, I just got the hard sell at CRO to reserv. the savannah view at AKL for $189 instead of the standard "parking lot" view for $129. So here is my question...is it really worth the extra money for the savannah view? We will be staying only 3 nights at AKL before transferring to the Beach Club for 5 nights. We could save $120 for the 3 nights by taking the parking lot view but I have heard that there is a great viewing window in the hotel anyway to see the animals. Is it worth the extra $$ to see the animals from your own room? How close to your balcony do the animals get? Thanks for your input! This is such a great site!!
Marilyn :)

Hi Marilyn and welcome! We stayed at the AKL last summer for 7 nights in a savannah view room. We enjoyed the view for a day or so but we kinda lost interest. Only the cattle were coming close to our balcony when we were there to watch. I would just rather spend the extra money in other ways. This is just my opinion. I'm sure there are others who wouldn't consider staying there without the savannah view. There are many places there to see the animals. AKL is a very nice resort with or without the animals. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Just stayed at AKL 2/12-2/20 and had a Savannah View on the Zebra Trail. It was so exciting to wake up in the morning and be able to see animals right from your balcony. I'd sit and have a cup of coffee on the balcony before I'd even get ready. I just happened to ask my DH the other day if we were to stay at AKL again would he stay in a standard room and he said he wouldn't even consider it. $189 is a great rate I'd scoop it up and enjoy yourself!

We stayed at AKL in Dec, booked a standard view and got upgraded to pool view. Yes, there are some who won't stay without savannah view but I'm not one of them! There are plenty of spots to see the savannahs (on the ground and around the levels of the resort) and we didn't miss seeing the animals from our balcony in the morning or at night (because I can't see in the morning anyway LOL! and we were too tired at night). If budget wasn't a concern, I'd probably go for savannah but if I had the choice of standard view or extra $$$ for other things, I'd go for the standard. Just being at AKL is an experience in itself - the animals are just the icing on the cake IMHO!

Hope this helps
Have fun whatever you decide

We chose standard. Maybe we'll get upgraded, but probably not. That's ok. I've heard there are plenty of places to view the animals. We're staying 4 nites. That adds up to $250 savings which will buy food for a couple of days.

By the way, how did you get $129? That's great. I'm paying $169 in April with postcard discount. (If you don't mind me askiin'.......)

We too also went with a standard view, but for some reason we got an upgrade to a savannah view. So we really did luck out with a beautiful room on the Zebra trail and I had no idea the bell man said to my girls oh look at the Giraffe and Zebra out there, and I said oh we have a standard room and he said no you have a very nice savannah view room, and we never asked for an upgrade we were just assigned a room and went.

Add us to the list that would take the standard view room. We also were there in December and got an upgrade to pool view.(without asking no less) There are wonderful places to view the animals all over the resort. The best for us was the night we were in the hot tub at the end of the Zebra Trail and looked up to see 3 giraffes looking down at us from about 20 feet away. Very cool. The money you save on the room will more than pay for a couple of great meals at Boma. It is a truly great place to stay. Have fun.

We stayed there right after New Years this year. I will have to admit we were not big fans of the AKL, a little to remote for us but to each his own. But anyway, we had Savannah view and I don't think I would go any other way. Unless you are really strapped for the money go for the Savannah view. The resort is beautiful but the draw is still the animals, you might as well be able to see them whenever you want from your balcony.
