AKL Room Request Assistance Please

Hi all,

We have a trip planned for this October for 9 nights at AKL. We normally stay at POP or POR for our WDW vacations, but this time we will be staying at AKL because we are meeting friends from overseas whom we have not seen in years. They were staying at AKL, and we decided to stay at the same resort so we could be near them.

We have reserved a Standard Room at AKL (with the new Fall Room offer!). At POP we always reserve Standard and request the 60's with a view of hourglass lake. Other than having eaten at Boma and Jiko, we do not have much knowledge of this resort. Can someone help us out with suggestions for room requests for a Standard Room? We know we will have roof or parking lot views, and we are fine with that. But are there better locations among the standard rooms? Maybe quieter, or with a slightly better view than the bus stop? Or maybe closer to the main lobby or dining areas?

In your situation, I would request near lobby. Chances of getting a "better" view are slim. But if you're near the lobby, not only do you have quicker access to buses, you can also pop down to the lobby area for easy access to the pool, animal viewing areas, the restaurants, etc.

In terms of location/convenience, I would ask to be close to the lobby. AKL is a great resort -- I hope you have fun there!

There are some standard view rooms with views of the animals (just not the "best" view of the animals) so if you'd prefer that, you could ask for that.

Not sure if this would be available for your dates, but I LOVE the pool view rooms at AKL. In our experience, the pool view rooms have been only slightly more expensive and well worth it. I love the proximity to the pool, Mara and the lobby. I enjoy the pool view rooms so much that I would even decline a complimentary upgrade to savannah view. (But it's not just me, so I guess I'd take an upgrade for the kids!)

Whether you stick with standard or investigate the pool view option, "close to lobby" is always a good request for us. And as mmears mentioned, if you would be interested in a possible view of the animals, you could request that.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I was just looking at the Touring Plans room map. It looks like there are not that many Standard rooms that actually have a view of the parking lot. Is that correct?

AKL cash reservation standard view rooms are a mixed lot - as you've noted the rooms on Giraffe and Ostrich trail look out over the front of the resort and are standard view (probably the least desirable - but they are relatively close to the lobby.) There are also what would be considered sub par savannah views classified as standard view through out the resort. One of the options w/ online check in will be Kudu trail, I believe - some of the rooms at the far ends of Kudu are quite a hike to the lobby, but you won't be looking at a road or a parking lot and will have at least a slice of a savanna view on Kudu trail. Giraffe and Zebra trail are probably the most convenient as they are close to the pool and Mara, the quick service restaurant, but those mostly have pool and regular savanna view (there may be a few Uzima savanna people pen views classified as standard on Zebra trail.)
It's a lovely resort and where ever you end up there are many places to watch the animals.

So with a standard view room booked, which would you request for a possibility of getting a chance of seeing animals from your room...Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, or Ostrich Trail?

Post 2 of this thread has a map of Jambo house - personally I don't know which request would give you the highest probability of getting a partial savanna view, my guess would be Kudu trail which has a lot of rooms with those at the very end and the people pen view rooms as well as those facing Ostrich trail probably being classified as 'standard' views, but half of the rooms on Ostrich trail would have a limited view of a part of Sunset Savanna as well.
