AKL Parking Gripe

OK, I'm tired of waiting for Spring and getting grouchy.
We stayed AKL a couple months ago and had a reasonably nice stay, aside from the torrential rains.

But one minor thing really got under my skin, and that is the walk from the self-parking area to the lobby. They seem to have gone out of their way to make it as difficult as possible.

Of course there is the usual problem that all the spaces convenient to the lobby are reserved for valet parking, but I'm used to that.

The first thing you come to when walking from self-parking to the lobby is the exit ramp from the lobby area used by cars and buses. It would have been soooo easy to put in a sidewalk next to this road leading up to the lobby, but apparently they couldn't be bothered. It is tempting to try to walk up the exit ramp anyway as it is by far the shortest route to the lobby, but that is dangerous as you can't see the vehicles coming until they start down this steep road, and there is no place to escape other than to dive into the bushes.

After you walk past the exit ramp, you come to an uphill path that leads through dense foliage to the lobby. But if you take it, you discover that it winds back and forth several times, taking about four times the necessary distance to get to the lobby. It is then that you remember the little wheelchair sign next to the beginning of the path and understand what it means -- this is the wheelchair-accessible path! You better have a good motor in your wheelchair to get up this path, even with the switchbacks.

The next time you go past the wheelchair path until you finally get to the pedestrian path up to the lobby. It is convenient if you're walking to or from the valet lot, but guests never do that, do they?! It is very inconvenient to and from self-parking; you have to go quite a bit out of your way.

I am fortunate to be in good health and capable of walking back and forth to self-parking ten times without strain, but those with mobility issues could be really affected by this situation. It's as if the entire lobby/parking area was designed by valet attendants to make things as easy as possible for themselves and as much a nuisance as possible for guests with the arrogance to park their own cars. Well they can just rot. I'm NEVER going to valet park at AKL! (Though I may well stay there again -- it's a great resort.)

I feel better now. Kind of.

I did not find the parking near that difficult.

However, if you do have a mobility issue I believe Valet parking is free.

I do understand what you are saying but after a day at the parks I guess it doesn't bother me to walk another 1/2 mile ;)

I had breakfast there a couple of weeks ago, we parked in self park and it didn't seem to be a problem. We crossed in front of the main door. I do have concerns about traffic though and people getting hit (can you tell I work for an insurance co?). If you've ever been to Wilderness Lodge, they have almost the exact same setup, my first thought was that the duplicated the plans.

I do have to agree that the self-parking was so far away. We don't drive much when we stay on property but we do go off to go to the outlets and we ended up using the valet parking after we checked in.

I do have to say that I loved this resort!!!

We really didn't find their parking lot that far away from the main doors. Most of the deluxes we have been to have parking away fromt the resort area. I thought our parking at AKL was closer than at BW.

I agree, self parking is pretty far away...and it's even worse when there aren't many available spaces anywhere near the front of the lot. That was my least favorite thing there, but I LOVED the resort...I would definitely trade a close parking spot for the rest that the AKL offers. :)

The parking lots are almost identical between the WL and the AKL, and the self parking lots are sort of a hike to the main lobby. I don't think it's much farther than BC, YC or the BW though. The Poly certainly has the closest parking lot, along with the Contemporary. Now, the GF is another matter... I think their self parking lot is located in Alabama!!!! :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

hi there erikthewise!
I think what you need is another vacation!
I know what you mean though, although we never use a car at WDW, I have seen where some of these parking lots are, the self parking for the GF is way far away too!

glad you got it off your chest!

Laura :)

Laura,

You're absolutely right! Unfortunately, and as you know, it won't be for another 9 months! At least not a Disney vacation.

Though I meant what I said, I wasn't entirely serious, just having some fun being a grump for change. My point wasn't that it's a terrible burden to walk in from parking, just that it's a guest-unfriendly design. I really had to stretch a point though, to find something to complain about at AKL! Of course, there's always room size..;)

Actually they do that to make the front more attractive than to have a parking lot right out front in view.

This is also a plus to those that get standard rooms that the parking lot is removed from the front of the resort.

However, if you do have a mobility issue I believe Valet parking is free.
You are right. If they have a state isued (by their home state) handicapped parking permit, then valet parking is free (tips are appreciated though).
For someone with a mobility problem, but no handicapped parking permit, they could be dropped off at the entrance, then one of the other members of their party could self park.

Anyone,
Is there now a fee to park valet? I thought if you stayed at a resort it was just tips. Has that changed? If it hasn't in the sceme of things the few of dollars a day to tip valet just doesn't bother me much after spending that much for the vacation. Time is money.

Yes, Disney now charged $6 per day (plus gratuity) to valet park. If you move your car during the day, you don't get charged again. But if you valet and leave your car in the valet for a few days, you will get charged $6 per day it is sitting in the valet lot.

is there also parking lots in other areas of AKL? We booked a standard room, should we take our luggage in when we first check in or might we be driving to a different area of the resort to get to our room? hate to check in then go back out to get luggage with parking being a ways off, and don't want to take luggage in at check in just to take it back out and drive around building.

I walked up the winding path once. After that I just walked right up the driveway. Even when the busses came there was plenty of room for everyone.

Our problem was not so much the daily walk, but that we couldn't unload our luggage in front and then quickly park the car in self-park. You can only pull up in front of the resort if you are valet parking or a bus. At least this what a (very rude) valet CM yelled at us. But once you get your luggage in, you get used to the hike to the lot. The resort is absolutely beautiful.

There is only one parking lot at the AKL. If you are checking in you can pull up to the front of the lobby, unload your luggage with one of the bell"persons" and then go park.

The bell person will load your luggage onto a luggage trolly and give you a claim ticket. After you check in at the registration desk, they will call for your luggage and the bell person will take you to your room.

I have never had a valet prevent this; in fact I would complain if one did. I have been asked to pull over to one side because they have to keep a clear lane.

Hello,
I've only stayed at AKL once and it was several years ago and I'm planning to go back in May. As I recall when I checked in I pulled to the front of the hotel and a bellhop helped me unload and then I self parked. Was I just lucky no one said anything.

Never stayed at AKL. but when we stayed at WL...we pulled up and bellhop got our lugage and we self parked...
